The annual report looks at a variety of demographics from among the 16.5 million income tax returns.

Several statistical analyses took different demographics – such as occupational, gender-based and state-based demographics – into consideration.

For instance, the report revealed that women only earned a higher average taxable income compared to males in 72 out of 1,100 recorded occupations. The top occupations where females earn higher are:

  • Pro surfer: $28,247 higher
  • Futures trader: $11,731 higher
  • Author: $10,336 higher
  • Magistrate: $6,975 higher
  • Illustrator: $3,941 higher

However, the data doesn’t show how much work each gender takes on and whether the income difference is due to higher rates or heavier workload.

Data collected from tax returns lodged for FY 2016-17 revealed the average taxable income in the different areas in Australia, among other things.

The ATO report recorded the highest average taxable income of $230,330 in NSW, specifically, in Sydney’s 2108 postcode. This postcode consists of Coasters Retreat, Currawong Beach, Great Mackerel Beach and Palm Beach.

Victoria is home to the taxpayers with the second-highest average taxable incomes in Melbourne’s postcode 3142, which covers Hawksburn and Toorak.

The third-highest group resides in Queensland’s 4007 postcode, covering the suburbs of Ascot, Hamilton and Hamilton Central. However, the state also has five of the bottom 10 postcodes with lowest average taxable incomes.

While the highest average taxable income was recorded in NSW, it also had the lowest average taxable income – $20,589 in postcode 2308, which covers Callaghan and Newcastle University.
