As micro-investing has become more mainstream, two major names have dominated the field for Australians looking to start their wealth creation journey.

Raiz and Spaceship have become the two biggest brands playing in the micro-investing space, but which offers a better deal for Aussie investors looking for a hands-off savings strategy?

What is Raiz?

Launched under the name Acorns back in 2016, Raiz’s biggest claim to fame was mainstreaming the idea of round-up savings. Both fellow fintechs and big banks have embraced this feature in the years since.

In addition to helping users save money through regular lump sums, Raiz users can connect their other bank accounts. Whenever you spend money via a connected account, the app then rounds that transaction up to the nearest dollar and then transfers that extra amount into your investment account.

Available on both iOS and Android, the Raiz boasts more than 500,000 active customers and $1 billion in funds under management.

Practically, the company operates as a managed investment fund.

Member funds are pooled and then invested as per a thematic portfolio of exchange-traded funds. The app offers six different portfolios of varying risk profiles, including an ESG-friendly Emerald Portfolio and a bitcoin-laced Sapphire Portfolio.

Any dividends earned from your investment are automatically reinvested. Raiz is as set-and-forget as these things come, and that’s a big part of its appeal.

What is Spaceship?

Spaceship is less pitched as a tool for helping you save money and more a gateway drug to the world of investing for those who aren’t super familiar with it but nevertheless keen to put money into companies investing in the future.

Like Raiz, Spaceship operates as a managed fund with an integrated smartphone app. Investors pool their money into the fund and then reap the financial benefits associated with their fractional share of it.

As it only launched in April 2018, Spaceship has a slightly smaller footprint than Raiz. It currently boasts more than 200,000 users, with more than $1 billion in funds under management.

Where Raiz has expanded into home loans and superannuation, Spaceship has remained focused on its core product. For some, that simplicity may prove appealing.

Which is better value?

For most users, the most important detail that separates Raiz from Spaceship is the difference in fee structure.

For Spaceship, customers with a balance of more than $100 face a $2.50 management fee each month. This flat fee structure replaced the previously complex percentage-based one earlier this year.

For Raiz, your fees scale with the number of funds in your account. If your account holds $15,000 or less, you’ll be charged $3.50 a month in fees. So if your balance was $5,000 for the year, you’d be charged $42.

However, this changes once your Raiz balance exceeds $15,000. Instead of the standard fee, you get charged 0.28 per cent a year in fees. For example, if you had $20,000 invested for the year, you’d be charged $55 in fees. 

On the other hand, Raiz accounts with a custom portfolio are charged a higher $4.50 per month. 

Once the funds in an account surpass $20,000, the same 0.28 per cent fee as other accounts applies.

Holding onto a long-term investment was already hard enough before COVID-19 entered the picture.

However, experts at managed fund Vanguard have claimed that those who panicked and sold amid the losses of March 2020 likely lost out in the long run.   

“The vast majority of investors who cashed out last year would have fared better on the whole if they had left their portfolios untouched,” said Balaji Gopal, head of personal investor at Vanguard. 

As put by Mr Gopal, one of the biggest lessons that investors can learn from the pandemic is that relying on short-term market conditions to drive your financial strategy remains highly risky. 

“On average, investors can expect to see one major attention-grabbing market downturn event every two years, testing an investor’s mettle to stick to a long-term strategy,” he explained. 

Mr Gopal said that there are two big decisions that investors have to get right: when to exit and the market and when to re-enter it. 

“Investment returns are largely determined by asset allocation and an investor’s resolve to stick to it, rather than by the timing of a trade,” he said. 

Vanguard’s annual index chart tracks investment performance across a number of different asset classes and a hypothetical investment of $10,000 in 1991.

Vanguard’s most recent annual index chart found that Australian investors with a stake in the ASX who got cold feet in March 2020 were $55,843 worse off than those who held until June 2021.

Australian investors who dabbled in US stocks would have been even worse off, with potential losses of approximately $60,344.

The message from the managed fund is clear: those who chose to sit out after the early losses of the pandemic missed out on the rebound that followed.

Mr Gopal said that investors will have the best chance of investment success if they are adequately diversified across different asset classes and able to make investment decisions based on clear long-term financial goals, as opposed to market swings or commentary.

“Despite the peaks and troughs, average market returns will trend upwards over time,” he reminded investors.

As put by Vanguard in a report accompanying the fund’s latest index chart, “historical market returns show that those who ignore the emotional swirl of short-term market conditions and focus on the long-term are rewarded for their patience and discipline”.

Consumers should be wary: Fund managers aren’t doing enough to ensure products are “true to label”, with a number of product names not aligning with underlying assets in those funds.

A statement from the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) said recent surveillance had found fund managers “must do more” in ensuring product naming and labelling practices are accurate for consumers.

This is especially pertinent given that during times of market volatility, consumers may be looking for alternate investment options offering regular or higher returns, “and financial product labels are used as a guide for consumers about what they are investing in”, ASIC conceded.

Having examined the appropriateness of product labels used by 37 managed funds, ASIC deputy chair Karen Chester said two significant concerns were raised across a number of products: “First, confusing and inappropriate product labels across 14 ‘cash’ funds with under $7 billion in assets. And second, redemption features not matching the liquidity of underlying assets, with a significant mismatch in three funds with under $1 billion in assets.”

According to ASIC, out of the 22 managed funds that used the term “cash” in their labelling, 14 funds had “confusing or inappropriate labels”.

It reported that some funds that were labelled as cash funds had asset holdings more akin to a bond or diversified fund, which have significantly higher risk and less liquidity compared with a traditional cash fund.

It flagged this as especially prominent in funds using words such as “cash enhanced” and “cash plus” in their labelling.

While the funds reviewed did generally display satisfactory of redemption features with liquidity, “significant mismatch” was seen in a small number of funds.

Ms Chester flagged that managed investment products “are not prudentially regulated or government-guaranteed, so it is paramount that consumers are not misled about the level of risk associated with a particular product”.

She said responsible entities must therefore ensure their products are “true to label”, stating that “this is not a nice-to-have”.

“It’s a must-have for responsible entities in meeting their legal obligations to their investors, especially in terms of market volatility.”

Explaining further, the deputy chair said inappropriate labelling of a fund can mislead investors into believing that the fund is much safer or more liquid than it actually is.

“Put simply, a fund should not use terms such as ‘cash’ or ‘cash enhanced’ unless its assets are predominantly in cash and cash equivalents.”

It comes after a warning to fund managers earlier this year that saw ASIC advise that consumers must only be given “clear, balanced and accurate information”.

At the time, the corporate regulator revealed it had put a number of managed investment schemes on notice.

Responsible investing is proving its worth in the investment game, beating out the total return of the S&P/ASX 300 over the last decade.

A study conducted by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA) and KPMG has found that responsible funds have outperformed mainstream funds over one, three, five and 10-year time horizons.

Not only that, the Responsible Investment Benchmark Report 2020 highlighted that responsible and ethical performance has continued to shine, despite the market disruption brought on by COVID-19.

The report revealed the average responsible investment fund outperformed the S&P/ASX 300 total return after one year (by 0.9 per cent), three years (by 1.0 per cent), five years (1.0 per cent) and 10 years (1.2 per cent).

It also beat out Morningstar’s Australia fund equity large blend – after one year, responsible investment funds posted 2.4 per cent better returns, after three years it was 2.3 per cent better returns, and after both five and 10-year spans, the returns had widened by 2.4 per cent.

According to RIAA CEO Simon O’Connor, “It’s become clear that responsible investors are ahead of the game.”

“They are identifying the key themes influencing markets and returns, which helps them to better navigate turbulent times, avoid the biggest risks and capture more opportunities.”

He said companies and assets are unlikely to thrive in 2020 and beyond “if they ignore issues such as climate change, health and safety, labour rights, corruption and lack of diversity”.

“Investors are fast realising that consideration of these issues provides more informed investment decisions, such as valuation and asset allocation.”

There is now $1,149 billion worth of responsible investments in managed assets – an increase of 17 per cent from 2018.

It means responsible investment now represents 37 per cent of Australia’s total $3.155 trillion in professionally managed assets.

A new relief measure will enable investors suffering hardship to access their investment money even where managed funds have been “frozen” to maintain fund stability through the COVID-19 pandemic.

ASIC announced the conditional relief in a statement on Wednesday afternoon, saying that it will make it easier for responsible entities of frozen funds to enable withdrawals by investors suffering hardship and improve access to those funds for affected individuals.

Previously, this relief was only available on a case-by-case basis only.

Funds are usually frozen when the responsible fund manager has suspended or cancelled redemptions to improve fund stability during times of volatility, such as the current pandemic.

ASIC pointed out that when a fund is frozen, members will generally not have access to their investments for a period of time, but that this does not necessarily mean that there has been a loss of asset value or that investors will not get their money back eventually.

According to the corporate regulator, to be eligible to make hardship withdrawals from frozen funds, a member must meet at least one “hardship criteria” such as severe financial hardship, unemployment for over three months, compassionate grounds or permanent incapacity.

Weighing in on the loosening of statutory restrictions, ASIC deputy chair Karen Chester acknowledged that fund freezing will protect the interests of members as a whole during times of extreme volatility.

While it may be the “right thing” to do, Ms Chester said “this can be especially problematic for some individual members experiencing financial hardship”.

As a result, the hardship relief will make it easier for responsible entities of frozen funds to enable withdrawals by investors suffering hardship, she highlighted.

“In doing so, responsible entities will still have to act in the best interests of members. We encourage responsible entities to consider whether the relief is appropriate for their particular fund,” the deputy chair concluded.
