The International Energy Agency has found that countries like Australia need to transition their energy grid within 14 years to reach net zero, defying Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s gas-led economic recovery.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has previously outlined his vision for a gas-led economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, declaring that the cheap and reliable power will help boost the economy.
Under the proposal, the government would avoid any supply shortfalls in the gas markets as well as unlock five key gas basins to ‘reset the gas market and create a more competitive and transparent gas hub’.
As part of the government’s gas-led recovery, it announced on 18 May that it would spend an additional $600 million on a new Kurri Kurri gas plant in NSW Hunter Valley.
In a statement, Energy Minister Angus Taylor noted the plant would secure reliable and affordable energy for NSW, following the closure of the Liddell power station.
“Cheap power is crucial to ensuring families, businesses and job-creating industries in NSW can thrive, which is why we are committed to replacing the energy generated by Liddell to keep prices down,” Mr Taylor said.
“This project will deliver flexible gas generation to replace Liddell and maintain reliable power alongside Australia’s world-leading investment in renewables.”
However, a new report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) found that in order for the world to reach net zero, progressive economies such as Australia will need to reach net zero by 2035.
While not telling Australia to completely abandon its gas, the report found that increasing global demand for low‐carbon hydrogen in the net zero emissions (NZE) provides a means for countries to export renewable electricity resources that could not otherwise be exploited.
“For example, Chile and Australia announced ambitions to become major exporters in their national hydrogen strategies. With declining demand for natural gas in the NZE, gas‐producing countries could join this market by exporting hydrogen produced from natural gas with carbon capture, utilisation and storage,” the report said.
The Climate Council of Australia’s head of research, Simon Bradshaw, described it as yet another nail in the coffin for fossil fuels.
“Instead of spending public money on gas, which will increase electricity prices and worsen climate change, Australia can and should be working towards net zero emissions by 2035, and capitalising on the benefits of leading the global transition to renewables,” said Mr Bradshaw.
The report, titled IEA’s Net Zero by 2050: A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector, outlines how the transition to net zero can create 14 million new jobs by 2030, almost three times more than the jobs that will be lost as fossil fuels decline.
“The IEA’s pathway to this brighter future brings a historic surge in clean energy investment that creates millions of new jobs and lifts global economic growth,” Fatih Birol, the IEA executive director, said.
“Moving the world onto that pathway requires strong and credible policy actions from governments, underpinned by much greater international cooperation.”
Australia’s Climate Council agrees, highlighting how Australia is uniquely positioned to benefit from an energy transition.
“As one of the sunniest and windiest countries on earth, Australia has everything we need to be a global renewable energy superpower and create good jobs in new clean energy industries,” said Mr Bradshaw.
“While states and territories are getting on with job-creating clean energy projects that reduce emissions and electricity bills, the federal government has its head in the sand,” he concluded.

Tuesday’s budget revealed that the government would introduce a production payment to support domestic refiners and direct support for the refiners to upgrade their infrastructure, but the cost of both was “not for publication” due to “commercial sensitivities”.

The government has since announced that the direct support will be at a cost of $302 million for infrastructure upgrades to help bring forward production of better-quality fuels from 2027 to 2024.
The variable fuel security service payment will see refineries paid a maximum of 1.8 cents per litre when the margin drops to $7.30 a barrel.
The payment will drop to 0 cents when the margin hits $10.20 a barrel, meaning refineries are only supported in downtimes and will not receive government support during the good periods.
All up under a worst-case scenario, the Australian taxpayer will have to pay $2.05 billion to keep the two refineries open, although their production could save drivers 1 cent a litre when they fuel up.
The Prime Minister said it would help all Australians through reducing fuel costs while projecting jobs, with 1,250 direct employees across the two refineries, and adding 1,750 jobs during the construction phase.
“Major industries like agriculture, transport and mining, as well as mum and dad motorists, will have more certainty and can look forward to vehicle maintenance savings and greater choice of new vehicle models,” Mr Morrison said.
“This next stage in our plan for Australia’s recovery will create jobs and make our country more self-sufficient and secure.”
The government will also accelerate the industry-wide review of the petrol and diesel standard to 2021, including a consideration of aromatics levels. This aims to create a Euro-6 equivalent petrol and diesel standard that are appropriate for Australia.
The government will work with both refineries on their plans to consider future fuel technologies and other development opportunities. This will include the refineries’ roles in the rollout of future fuels, such as electric vehicle charging and hydrogen transport infrastructure.

The Commonwealth will contribute $660 million and South Australia will provide $422 million as part of the agreement.
“Families and businesses need affordable, reliable power. That is what reduces prices and creates jobs. Australians also want to ensure we are doing everything we responsibly can to combat climate change,” the Prime Minister said.
“This means getting more gas into the market to support the increase in renewable solar and wind power coming into the electricity system. One works with the other to deliver lower cost, lower emissions and reliable power.”
Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall said the deal will help provide jobs and lower the cost of electricity, while helping the state’s growing renewables industry.
“This agreement also coordinates our efforts to deliver a hydrogen export industry in South Australia, deliver carbon capture and storage to reduce emissions, deliver the infrastructure needed for electric cars, and generate new revenue for farmers from carbon reductions,” he said.
The proposal aligns with Scott Morrison’s gas-led recovery, which has been heavily scrutinised by industry experts.
Under the proposal, the government has set a gas target of an additional 50 petajoules per annum by the end of 2023 and a stretch target of 80 petajoules per annum by 2030 to help increase the supply of reliable and affordable gas to the east coast of Australia.
The Australia Institute’s chief economist, Richard Denniss, said there has been no gas-led economic recovery, despite the government’s claims, since employment in the gas industry has been on the decline over the past year.
“There is no gas-led recovery; we’ve recovered without gas,” he told Sky News.
“In fact, to the extent the economy has recovered – and the government’s rightly proud of how quickly the economy has recovered – it’s important to know employment in the gas industry fell 10 per cent in the last 12 months.
“So, given that we’ve already been led out of COVID, it can’t be gas-led because gas has been going backwards.
“We’ve created hundreds of thousands of jobs in the last six months, and we’ve done it without the gas industry leading it.”

The paper argues that Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) should shut down two-thirds of coal power plants, replacing them with 70 per cent renewable energy as it is unlikely to materially increase costs for Australian households.
The economic modelling suggests that moving to a system with 90 per cent renewable energy without coal could still remain reliable, although it would see the cost of keeping the lights on increase due to the need for generation, transmission and storage for days “when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing”.
“Nonetheless, this would be a low-cost way to nearly eliminate emissions in the NEM, and offsetting any remaining emissions each year could well be the cheapest way to reach net zero,” lead author Tony Wood said.
The report pushes for most of Australia’s coal-fired power stations, which are due to be retired in 2040, not to be renewed or upgraded.
“Australia can achieve the trifecta of reliable, affordable, low-emissions electricity, and we can do it without coal,” Mr Wood noted.
However, Grattan’s findings warn against rushing completely to renewable energy, saying it would see prices “skyrocket for consumers” without major technological advances to back up renewable supply.
Instead, they argue Australia should commit only to “net” zero emissions in the NEM by the 2040s, not “absolute” zero emissions or 100 per cent renewable energy.
With the absence of technologies today to go completely renewable, Grattan has noted the importance of gas as a transition electricity source.
They said gas generation with negative-emissions offsets will be the lowest-cost ‘bridging’ technology until a zero-emissions alternative, such as hydrogen-fired generation, pumped hydro storage or carbon capture and storage, becomes an economically competitive backstop.
“Gas is likely to play the critical backup role, though not an expanded role. Australia will make a gas-supported transition to a net-zero emissions electricity system – but not a ‘gas-led recovery’ from the COVID recession,” Mr Wood concluded.

In fact, ASIC reviews in 2017 and 2019 found that approximately 80 per cent of retail clients lost money trading binary options because of the nature of these financial products, including their ‘all or nothing’ payoff structure, their short contract duration, and negative expected returns.
As such, as of 3 May, the issue and distribution of binary option to retail clients will be banned.
According to commissioner Cathie Armour, “Binary options’ product characteristics make them incompatible with investment or risk management use by retail clients.”
“ASIC’s product intervention order will protect retail investors from these harmful products at a time of heightened vulnerability,” the commissioner clarified.
Following ASIC’s warning in April 2019 against providing unlicensed or unauthorised services to clients located in several foreign jurisdictions, the size of the binary market in Australia is believed to have reduced significantly.
Australian retail clients are estimated to have made net losses of more than $6.7 million in 2019, compared with $490 million in 2018.
ASIC’s binary options ban brings Australian requirements into line with prohibitions in force in comparable markets and follows the commencement on 29 March 2021 of ASIC’s product intervention order imposing conditions on contracts for difference offered to retail clients.
The order will remain in force for 18 months, after which it may be extended or made permanent. Civil and criminal penalties apply to contraventions of the product intervention order.
What is a binary option?
A binary option is a cash-settled, over-the-counter (OTC) derivative entered into by two counterparties – the binary option issuer and the client.
The ‘all-or-nothing’ payout under a binary option contract is determined by the occurrence or non-occurrence of a specified event in a defined time frame. This can include an event related to movements in the price of a financial product or a market index or an economic event.

Why you should invest in gold over bitcoin
Meld Gold’s founder Michael Cotton believes that gold is the only true store of wealth against inflation, with crypto assets such as bitcoin (BTC) simply trying to recreate the properties that make gold unique.
“If we want to be harsh, BTC plagiarised gold’s natural DNA and recreated it on chain. In reality, it’s a really hard thing to actually copy the physical attributes of gold. Gold is understood and globally accepted across the world. Gold is the only asset in the world accepted at local currency prices,” he told investors.
Mr Cotton points out that due to gold being universally accepted and having a relatively stable price compared with crypto currencies, it acts as a store of wealth for investors against inflation.
“In terms of a currency, the volatility of BTC makes it very hard for the average person to use it as a currency in their lives.
“If you have your pay cheque in BTC, for example, and by the end of the week it’s halved in value and you can’t cover your bills, that is a real issue.”
“So, while that volatility makes for an amazing opportunity for investing, but it does mean it’s hard to use as currency. Even for a concept of storing BTC, having to constantly adjust the price of it is a real investment issue,” Mr Cotton explained.
He also highlighted that gold over the last 15 years has seen an average 10 per cent increase in price, meaning it has outperformed the sharemarket, bonds and property while acting as a store of wealth.
Why you should invest in bitcoin over gold
Apollo Capital’s chief investment officer, Henrik Andersson, told investors that if they had started a portfolio with equal weights in BTC and gold, that BTC would become the larger share quickly due to its superior performance.
He also noted that bitcoin has a more finite supply compared with gold, especially as humans look to expand mining operations across the universe.
“When it comes to gold, maybe not an unlimited supply but pretty close to it when a single astroid can have 700 quintillion worth of gold, so that is 700 billion billion dollars worth of gold.
“If that gold was brought back to earth, everyone would get $92 billion. So, only things that are scarce and have utility have value, and gold is not limited in supply.”
While highlighting space mining is unlikely to start up tomorrow, he said it could be an issue for investors over the coming decades.
Mr Andersson also opined that BTC is the more secure asset class, even though BTC’s heightened security has meant up to 2 million coins have been lost forever.
“With computer science, we have unprecedented deep security,” he said.
“With most technology, it’s easier to attack than defend, but cryptography is very different. It’s much easier to secure than attack,” he said.
Which way are investors leaning?
Australian cryptocurrency and digital assets exchange BTC Markets has revealed that more Australians now invest in cryptocurrencies like bitcoin than precious metals like gold and silver.
Commenting on the findings, BTC Markets CEO Caroline Bowler said she is not surprised that more Australians now invest in cryptocurrency than fixed income, annuities or commodities.
“Digital assets and cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular among Australian investors of all ages.
“In the last 12 months, we have seen a shift from 25-45-year-old males to a much broader age group, particularly early retirees who are interested in diversifying their investment portfolio and are catching up with this fastest-growing asset class.”
The survey found that one in three (33 per cent) crypto investors made their first investment in bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies after the stock market crash led by the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.
