Committing to being smarter about your money can be a new year’s resolution that pays for itself, but it can be hard to make a start during the holiday season itself.

Speaking to nestegg, Wealth Within chief analyst Dale Gillham said that the lead-up to Christmas often makes it easier to lose control of your finances.

“We all get stuck in traps this time of year that cause us to overspend, like feeling obligated to buy presents for others,” he said.

“Now I am not suggesting you forget your spouse or mother, but often we feel pressure to spend on gifts that others really don’t need or want, so why do it.” 

Mr Gillham made the case that, when it comes to gifts, less can sometimes be more.

“Often a handwritten note or card is far better as it says what you feel and does not cost you much,” he said.

Another trick for those looking to avoid overspending is to start your shopping process by putting a number on the most you’re willing to spend for each individual on your Christmas list.

“This will help you avoid that impulse to overspend because you will not just look for a present the recipient will love, but rather you will focus your attention on presents they will love in the price range you set,” he said.

It can also pay to prepare when it comes to your seasonal shopping.

Rather than wander around a shopping centre until you find what you’re looking for, Mr Gillham advocated for an approach that he called destination shopping.

“Let your fingers do the shopping online, then write down exactly what stores you need to go to, the price of everything you want, then go to the shops with one purpose and that is to get out with everything on your list as fast as you can.

“Doing this means you will not suffer bill shock when you get your credit card statement in January, and more importantly you will not be working the next three months just to pay off the extra you spent,” he explained.

With the reopening of international borders, many Australians have started thinking about travel again.

However, personal finance expert Christopher Zinn told nestegg that there are a few budgeting habits that Australians may need to relearn before they go anywhere.

To begin with, he recommended that those looking to travel abroad begin preparing by getting a better sense of their expenses over the course of a year.

Learning to see where your potential savings opportunities lie can often be a necessary first step towards taking advantage of them.

“Set aside some money from each payslip for the significant outgoings, including your travel ones,” he said.

If possible, would-be travellers may even want to consider opening a dedicated account for them.

“The advantage here is that you won’t have to scramble to find the money for your next holiday – it will be sitting right there in your holiday’s account, ready to be accessed when you need it,” Mr Zinn explained.

Beyond your annual expenses, it may also be worth looking at how much you’ve spent on previous trips abroad.

While such an undertaking can feel daunting for those who typically don’t spend that much time budgeting, it can help you identify what expenses didn’t give you value or areas you could have spent less.

“An annual plan makes you feel in control before, during and after the trip. Feeling you’re not making any real sacrifice, you’ll enjoy your holiday even more,” Mr Zinn said.

Smart travellers will also want to keep a close eye on official government warnings, restrictions and regulations first, before and even during your trip.

“The rules change fast, and apart from feeling ‘safe’, you do not want to face avoidable costs, delays and uncertainty,” Mr Zinn said.

He recommended regularly checking in with the federal government’s smart traveller and doing your research when it comes to travel insurance.

“Some travel insurers now offer limited cover for COVID-19 if you, or someone you’re traveling with, tests positive to the virus. But there are several restrictions you need to consider, including if the country you’re traveling to is on the list of the government travel bans,” he added.

The frugal financial habits of Aussies are changing to take advantage of new freedoms.

According to data released by Mastercard, the average Australian consumer has saved around $5,000 since the pandemic began.

However, with an easing of lockdown restrictions in sight, many consumers now say they plan to change up their spending in a bid to make up for lost time.

Mastercard’s research suggested that this shift in behaviour will see Aussies rack up an extra $420 per month in spending.

The most popular activities here included dining out at 56 per cent and international travel at 62 per cent.

Mastercard’s findings here align with similar data released by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which found that 88 per cent of young Australians made sacrifices to their lifestyle in order to afford larger purchases.

As much as 65 per cent of Aussies aged between 25 and 35 admitted to sidestepping everyday items like household goods or new shoes for temptations like tech and experiences like concerts and festivals.

Other items these younger consumers felt were worth sacrificing included clothing, furniture and dining out.

Mastercard Australia vice-president of cyber and intelligence Mallika Sathi reminded eager consumers to remain wary of scammers.

“For many Australians, the coming months will prove to be priceless as they reconnect and rediscover the joy of in-person experiences with friends and family,” she said.

Ms Sathi noted that approximately 64 per cent of those surveyed admitted to spending money through an unfamiliar online website or business that they had not purchased from prior to lockdown.

Despite this, Mastercard found that 1 in 2 Australian consumers didn’t even check Google or check social media for signs of legitimacy before spending.

All told, the company found that the average amount lost because safe shopping habits weren’t followed was around $425. 

Ms Sathi’s comment comes on the back of a warning by Australian Competition and Consumer Commission advising consumers to remain wary during the final stretch of 2021.

ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said that it isn’t uncommon for scammers to take advantage of the last-minute Christmas rushes by consumers.

“People are often searching for the best deals online, especially in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, so it’s easy to be caught off guard and fall for a scam,” she said.

Australians looking to work towards financial freedom are embracing a new approach.

Younger generations are putting their own spin on the traditional wealth-creation journey through a new push towards financial wellness.

Wisr chief strategy officer Dr Lili Sussman told nestegg that financial wellness is a multifaceted and complex issue, one that’s both subjective and objective. 

“It’s about the role of money in your life and the relationship with yourself,” she said.

Dr Sussman said that financial wellness isn’t about purely how much money you earn, nor is it about how much you can save through tips and tricks. According to her, financial wellness eschews the simplicity of easy fixes and turns the complexity of financial literacy into a strength rather than a burden.

“Financial wellness has to do with being able to meet your current financial needs, setting yourself up for the future, having control over your money decisions and understanding how money helps you to live your values,” she explained.

Importantly, where financial wellness differs from the typical journey towards financial freedom is that it embraces a more nuanced perspective. That means acknowledging that not every individual sees financial wellness the same way and that not everyone is working towards the same goals.

This flexibility is part of its appeal to younger demographics, as it asks them how they can find financial wellness within their lifestyle rather than asking them to start living a different one.

“We all have different financial goals and values — not to mention hobbies, expenses and living situations — which means there’s no one right way to financial wellness,” Dr Sussman said.

However, in order to change, you have to know where to start.

“When you’re financially stressed, the last thing you need is to be told ‘stop spending and start meal prepping, you’ll be fine’,” Dr Sussman said.

According to her, achieving financial wellness isn’t something limited by age, gender or earning capacity. Ultimately, it comes down to financial literacy.

“With knowledge comes power and, in turn, helps you to understand your relationship and behaviour with money. It’s a key foundation of improving your financial  wellness,” she said.

Beyond just being willing to re-evaluate and rethink the way you think about money, Dr Sussman said that a willingness to commit to better financial behaviours over the long run can be critical.

“Like our physical health, everyone has the right to be financially well and can get there by building good habits,” she said.

“Until you can accurately identify your actual personal income and expenses, you will always be spending on things without knowing if they are affordable at that point in time,” she said.

For those looking to start calculating the costs of their next Christmas, Ms Oliver said that tracking your everyday household expenses is a great place to begin.

“This will allow you to see a clear picture of what surplus you have to work with,” she said, comparing the effective budgeting of a household to that of a successful business.

Once you’ve got that positively geared amount of income in mind, Ms Oliver explained that the next step was to divide and conquer your Christmas expenses.

Some Australians found lockdown an opportunity to get better about saving money, but holding on to those habits takes work.

With Australia’s economy poised for reopening, it’s important that consumers don’t lose those good budgeting habits they picked up during the pandemic.

According to Schroders Global Investor Study 2021, 68 per cent of Australian investors are more focused on their finances now than they were before COVID-19.

“The pandemic seems likely to have a long-lasting effect on people’s finances, with many investors looking to save more for retirement and prioritise saving over spending,” Schroders Australia CEO Sam Hallinan said.

Speaking to nestegg, 86 400 CMO Travis Tyler said that the conditions of lockdown encouraged many Australians to shift from a spending mentality to one focused on saving money instead.

“We’ve seen more customers paying their loans down, saving a higher proportion of their regular pay and setting up regular savings plans,” he said.

Mr Tyler revealed that more consumers are reviewing their expenses to identify where extra savings can be found.

However, he warned that these gains are at risk of being offset by the rise of the convenience economy.

When it comes to online shopping, for example, Mr Tyler said that consumers are purchasing items like clothing in smaller amounts, but doing so more frequently.

These small-value, high-frequency purchases add up quickly, he warned.

“The challenge is to be disciplined, so these smaller amounts don’t add up to the previous, larger shopping sprees that we may save for, or mentally allow for each pay packet,” Mr Tyler said.

Wisr chief strategy officer Dr Lili Sussman said that those looking to make the most of their newfound saving habits should make paying down debt a priority.

She said that the fastest way to go about this is to contribute more than the minimum each month.

“However, you should always check the terms and conditions of paying your debt down faster, as some institutions have maximum repayment limits within certain periods and additional fees associated with paying it down faster,” she added.

To help with this, Dr Sussman emphasised the importance of getting on top of your spending habits.

“You may find some expenses like monthly subscriptions coming out of your account that you forgot about,” she said.

Once you’re done paying down debt, Dr Sussman recommended focusing on building up an emergency fund target. According to her, going specific is usually the way to go here.

“Setting specific and time-bound targets for your savings is the best way to slowly build up your emergency funds and will help you feel more financially secure overall,” she said.

Another long-term indicator of financial fitness to keep in mind is credit score.

Dr Sussman said that your credit score shouldn’t be overlooked when it comes to getting your finances in shape, as it may be used by credit providers to determine whether or how much money they can lend.

She warned that those who change their place of residence should be especially careful not to miss any final utility payments, as this can cost them.

Ultimately, Dr Sussman advocated for Australians to set financial milestones and goals when it comes to setting yourself up for the future because they create a structure and context around what you’re doing.

“It’s important to know that the things you do now can make a difference down the  track,” she said.
