Rest, one of Australia's largest profit-to-member superannuation funds, has reported impressive returns in its flagship MySuper Growth investment option for the year 2025. The fund is optimistic about the global economy's potential for continued expansion, despite the challenges posed by central bank policies and geopolitical uncertainties.

The MySuper Growth option delivered a robust 9.22% return over the 12 months leading up to 31 December 2025. This marks the third consecutive year of positive returns, driven primarily by the strong performance of both Australian and international share markets. This performance has bolstered the Growth option’s long-term annualised return to 7.31% over a decade, surpassing its investment return objective of 5.83% for the same period. This achievement underlines the Growth option's consistent success in exceeding its CPI+3% investment return objective over 10-year spans.

Rest's High Growth option and its RIAA-certified Sustainable Growth option also reaped the benefits of buoyant share markets, recording returns of 11.25% and 11.49% respectively for the 2025 calendar year.

Michael Clancy, Rest’s Chief Investment Officer, expressed satisfaction with the year's outcomes. "Global share markets continued to be the leading drivers of investment performance in 2025. Markets responded positively to earnings strength, which supported company valuations, and several central banks eased monetary policy," he stated. Clancy highlighted the significance of these results for Rest's members, adding, "It’s great to deliver another year of healthy investment returns in 2025 for Rest’s more than 2 million members. A return of 9.22% means a 30-year-old Rest member with $35,000 in their super would have added more than $3,000 to their balance over the year."

Clancy noted that strong short-term investment returns are crucial for achieving long-term objectives, particularly as Rest’s typical member is younger and far from retirement. He anticipates continued global economic growth in 2026, albeit with obstacles. "Inflation, while improved, is proving sticky both in Australia and the US. The weakening labour market in the US has allowed the Federal Reserve to consider further rate cuts. In contrast, recent data in Australia has indicated a broad-based rise in price pressures," Clancy remarked.

He further elaborated on the potential challenges for the year ahead, "With household budgets under pressure and consumer confidence weakening, how central banks navigate inflation in 2026 will have a direct impact on Australian workers’ wages, job security, and long-term retirement outcomes."

The geopolitical landscape remains a significant variable in the economic outlook. "The new year has just begun, but we’ve already seen that the geopolitical landscape remains uncertain. This, along with the strength of US demand and labour conditions, will influence the path back towards central bank inflation targets," Clancy observed.

Rest’s investment strategy is designed to withstand such uncertainties. "Rest’s long-term, well-diversified and forward-looking investment approach puts us in good stead to continue to deliver on our long-term investment return objectives," Clancy assured. He emphasised the fund's focus on investment opportunities aligned with long-term megatrends, "We’ll continue to focus on investment opportunities that are informed by the long-term megatrends that we believe will shape society, economies and financial markets over the coming decades – decarbonisation, deglobalisation, demographics, digitalisation, and debt and central bank policy."

According to the new modelling, a typical female teenage worker could see her super balance increase by $2,500 by the time she turns 18 if she receives super contributions for at least two years. In comparison, a typical male teenage worker could accumulate $2,000 more by age 18 and $9,000 more by retirement under the same conditions.

Simone Van Veen, Rest's Chief Member Officer, emphasised the importance of making super universal for all under-18 workers. “By changing this unfair law, not only can we help countless young Australians have a fairer start with their super, we can also help close the gender super gap,” she stated. Van Veen highlighted the current disparity, noting, “Women under the age of 18 are less likely to work more than 30 hours than men. We also know female Rest members of this age typically have smaller monthly contributions than under 18 male members.”

The gender super gap is a persistent issue, with female Rest members nearing retirement in their 60s facing a gap of approximately 27% compared to their male counterparts. Van Veen believes that addressing the issue from the beginning of a worker's career is crucial. “Changing this law would mean we are taking another step to close this gender super gap for young women from day one of their working life,” she said.

The call for change is supported by a significant portion of Rest's membership base, which includes over 1 million young members under the age of 30, many of whom work in part-time and casual roles. “Every worker under the age of 18 deserves to earn super and receive the benefit of compounding returns no matter how many hours they work,” Van Veen argued. She cited research commissioned by Rest earlier this year, revealing that nearly all Rest members believe it is important for superannuation to apply to all working Australians, regardless of income or hours worked.

The sentiment is echoed by the broader membership, with a survey conducted by the Redbridge Group in early 2025 showing that 98% of Rest members feel superannuation should apply to all working Australians. A strong 71% support making super payable to all workers under the age of 18, regardless of their working hours, with female support slightly higher at 73%.

This advancement comes just a month after the finalisation of the Payday Super laws, which mandate employers to pay superannuation contributions concurrently with wages starting 1 July 2026. The milestone, achieved through the New Payments Platform (NPP) and powered by HeroClear, represents a pivotal moment for businesses bracing for the impending regulatory changes.

The introduction of HeroClear marks a transformative shift in how superannuation payments are handled. By embedding the super-clearing and validation process within payroll systems, HeroClear offers instantaneous confirmations, reduces errors, and provides a comprehensive audit trail. This innovation eliminates the need for traditional clearing houses, which often require cumbersome file uploads, portal navigation, and manual reconciliations. 

Rob Dunn, General Manager of Benefits and Superannuation at Employment Hero, hailed the development as a turning point for payroll and superannuation in the country. If it hadn’t flagged it, our super payment would have failed, but instead we fixed it instantly and everything went through smoothly. The Rest Pay solution is specifically tailored for the upcoming Payday Super requirements, which will mandate that employers pay their employees' superannuation contributions concurrently with their wages for each pay cycle. This change is set to take effect from 1 July 2026, as part of reforms announced in the Federal Budget in May 2023 and passed by Federal Parliament in November 2025.

Simone Van Veen, Rest’s Chief Member Officer, emphasised the transformative potential of the new platform. "Rest Pay aims to take the hassle out of making super payments. It’s easy to use, built with market-leading security, and helps employers meet upcoming Payday Super requirements without extra stress," she explained. Van Veen highlighted that the platform is designed to ensure that businesses can pay super accurately and on time, thus maintaining compliance while providing members with confidence that their super contributions will reach their accounts as scheduled.

The introduction of Rest Pay is expected to facilitate faster growth of super balances for members by unlocking the power of compounding returns through more frequent contributions. "It supports businesses to pay super accurately and on time so they stay compliant, while giving members confidence that their super is on track to reach their account when it should," Van Veen added.

Rest Pay's features are tailored to simplify superannuation contributions for employers of all sizes. The platform reduces errors, streamlines refund processing, and offers automated reminders alongside round-the-clock support to help employers stay on track. Moreover, planned payroll integration is set to further enhance efficiency. "Rest Pay is a key part of Rest’s commitment to simplifying super administration for business, while supporting retirement outcomes for our members," Van Veen noted.

The rollout of Rest Pay is currently underway, targeting employers who already use Rest’s administrator’s existing clearing house. The service is available at no cost for Rest default employers. By early next year, Rest plans to extend access to more than 300,000 other employers who pay super to a Rest member, with new employers being able to register their interest via the Rest website.

The development of Rest Pay was a collaborative effort over the past 18 months, involving Rest’s administrator MUFG Retirement Solutions and tech company Wrkr. The platform was shaped by direct feedback from employers, ensuring that its features meet the practical needs of businesses. A successful pilot program demonstrated that employers valued the platform’s intuitive interface and usability, reinforcing Rest's decision to proceed with the broader rollout.

The upcoming Payday Super requirements represent a significant shift in how superannuation contributions are managed in Australia. Currently, employers are required to pay Superannuation Guarantee contributions quarterly.
