For individuals, the cost is $53,289 per year, up from $43,687 in 2020.
Alexis George, AMP's Chief Executive, expressed concern over these findings, stating, "Australians over the age of 65 will make up nearly a quarter of our population within four decades – a demographic shift set to reshape the nation's economic and social landscape. Yet, as this Pulse shows, despite growing super balances and national wealth, too many feel financially insecure about life after work – an issue that needs to be front and centre for policymakers and the superannuation industry."
The Retirement Confidence Pulse has shed light on several key areas of concern. A significant gender gap exists, with only two in five women feeling confident about their retirement prospects, compared to nearly three in five men. This disparity underscores the ongoing challenges women face in achieving financial security.
The survey also highlighted the struggles of the so-called "Sandwich Generation" – individuals in their 40s who are often juggling mortgages, raising children, and caring for ageing parents. Fewer than two in five in this age group expressed confidence in their retirement plans. Single mothers in their 40s reported particularly low confidence levels, with less than one in five feeling secure about their retirement, marking them as one of the most vulnerable groups.
Interestingly, the survey revealed that confidence does not necessarily increase with age. More than one in three Australians aged 65 and older still feel financially insecure, worried that their savings may not last through their retirement years. This finding suggests that even reaching the traditional retirement age does not guarantee financial peace of mind.
The survey also identified a "confidence dividend" associated with being in a partnership. Partnered Australians are significantly more confident about their retirement prospects, with nearly three in five expressing confidence, compared to just two in five singles. However, divorce can have a detrimental impact on retirement confidence, particularly for women. Only one in three separated or divorced women feel confident about their financial future, in contrast to over half of separated or divorced men.
Income levels also play a crucial role in retirement confidence. Three in four Australians earning between $190,000 and $250,000 reported feeling confident about their retirement, while only two in five earning less than $45,000 shared the same sentiment. Middle-income Australians, those earning between $45,000 and $135,000, were evenly split, with just half expressing confidence.
In response to these findings, AMP has launched the Retirement Confidence Hub, an initiative aimed at translating insights into practical solutions. The Hub's Advisory Committee, which includes industry experts such as AMP’s Chief Economist Dr Shane Oliver and Director of Retirement Ben Hillier, is tasked with addressing these challenges. Nicola Stokes, CEO of the AMP Foundation, is also part of the committee, ensuring that social and community needs are considered.
Ben Hillier, Chair of The Retirement Confidence Hub, stated, "The Pulse is our scoreboard; the Retirement Confidence Hub is our game plan – a standing effort to turn evidence into action so more Australians can feel confident about their retirement, and unlock a better quality of life. This requires a system that is easier to understand, improved financial literacy, easier access to guidance and advice at critical life moments, and more solutions that provide lifetime income and which unlock the considerable wealth tied up in property."

Among those who had already retired, 20 per cent have returned to work, and around a quarter cited financial pressures as their reason for doing so.
Aware Super chief executive Deanne Stewart said the findings highlighted widespread uncertainty and a lack of understanding about how to make superannuation work in retirement.
“What the State of Retirement research tells us is that too many people don’t understand their options or how to make the most of their superannuation in retirement,” Ms Stewart said.
“We also know that many people are feeling uncertain about the future more broadly.”
Ms Stewart said that while awareness around the importance of investment returns had grown, with most people over 45 understanding that nearly half of their super balance at retirement comes from investment returns, there were still major knowledge gaps.
The research found that more than three quarters of Australians did not realise they could leave their super invested in retirement to draw a flexible income, potentially benefiting from concessional tax treatment and ongoing returns.
Additionally, 27 per cent of Australians aged 45 and over were unaware that super could become a tax-free income source in retirement. Aware Super provided an example showing that keeping a $400,000 super balance invested rather than cashing it out could deliver an extra $5,200 in annual income.
Ms Stewart encouraged Australians to seek guidance early.
“If you haven’t had a chat with your superannuation fund about planning for retirement, now is the time—no matter what age or life stage you’re at,” she said.
“Our research shows ‘not knowing’ your options could cost retirees thousands of dollars over the course of their retirement.”
She said Aware Super was committed to providing access to financial advice and tools, including its free My Retirement Planner, online learning hub and one-on-one support through its member services team.
The report also revealed a shift in attitudes toward retirement wealth, with 91 per cent of respondents saying their superannuation was primarily for their own use rather than something to pass on to children or grandchildren.
“This evolving mindset reflects a broader shift in how Australians approach retirement—not just as a time for financial security, but as a phase of life defined by purpose, wellbeing, and connection,” Ms Stewart said.

Enhancing financial confidence in retirement
Analysis of over 1,500 customer accounts revealed that MyNorth Lifetime users are benefiting from higher levels of retirement income through a market-linked lifetime income stream. This has allowed many members to retire earlier and access greater financial security.
Ben Hillier, AMP Director of Retirement, highlighted the positive impact of the program.
“With the benefit of face-to-face advice and a rich solution that provides a higher income for life, we’re helping more Australians get the most out of retirement. That’s already translating into some really pleasing outcomes, with the majority of older Australians spending more and retiring earlier,” he said.
Addressing concerns about retirement savings
Recent findings from the Grattan Institute and Federal Treasury indicate that many retirees are not drawing down their superannuation at sustainable rates due to concerns about outliving their savings. Treasury data shows that more than half of Australian retirees withdraw only the statutory minimum from their super.
Despite rising superannuation balances—averaging over $200,000 for singles and $300,000 for couples—many retirees leave up to 65% of their super unspent by the end of their lives.
AMP’s MyNorth Lifetime aims to address these concerns by combining the flexibility of an account-based pension with the security of annuities, ensuring members can optimise their income throughout retirement.
Industry recognition and future innovation
Since its launch in 2022, MyNorth Lifetime has gained significant traction, with over $505 million invested through more than 1,500 new members. Around 70% of these members are new to AMP’s platform.
The solution has been recognised for its innovation, winning the **Chant West Lifetime Product Best Fund Award in 2024** and the **Chant West Innovation Best Fund Award in 2023**.
Edwina Maloney, AMP Group Executive, Platforms, said the response from advisers and members has been overwhelmingly positive.

RLC Executive Director Daniel Gannon said: "We know that 67 per cent of retirement village development applications take more than 365 days to complete assessment, while 23 per cent take more than 730 days."
Gannon added: "This is alarming and unacceptable, with governments crying out for more housing supply on one hand, while seemingly holding it back at the same time."
Despite the downturn, the survey reveals that the retirement living industry maintains the strongest sentiment for construction activity compared to other sectors, surpassing residential, office, industrial and retail combined.
The RLC highlighted the potential benefits of retirement villages, noting that residents are 20 per cent less likely to require hospitalisation after nine months of living in these communities, leading to 14,000 avoided annual hospitalisations across Australia.
Gannon stated: "As a consequence, these communities are minimising the interactions older Australians have with GPs and hospitals, while importantly delaying entry into taxpayer funded aged care and saving the government $945 million annually as a result."
To improve planning systems, the RLC recommends:
- Establishing minimum land allocations for retirement communities in under-supplied areas
- Offering zoning or development bonuses to incentivise retirement village development
- Introducing targets for age-friendly developments in strategic regional and metropolitan plans
- Collaboration between planning authorities and industry to identify high-need locations and ageing hot spots
The RLC's call for action comes as Australia faces a projected 85 per cent increase in the number of people over 75 by 2040, emphasizing the need for more age-friendly housing options.
