Strong spending over the Christmas shopping period in December has been followed by a weaker January.

The CommBank Household Spending Intentions Index moved up by 2.5 per cent to 115 in December, which the bank said was the highest level since the series commenced in July 2017.
“December is generally a seasonally strong time for retail due to Christmas shopping,” said CBA senior economist Belinda Allen.
“However, this was compounded by the fact that December 2021 marked the end of restrictions post Delta and there was accumulated household savings, which led to a strong surge in spending.”
CBA economists estimated that household savings totalled $260 billion as of the end of 2021.
Travel saw the biggest increase in spending intentions in December with a rise of 28.1 per cent. Spending on travel was also up 20.9 per cent compared to December 2020 but remained lower than December 2019.
Transport spending intentions lifted 11.8 per cent, driven by higher petrol prices, while retail spending intentions were up 10.8 per cent.
“The Omicron variant, which has led to a surge in COVID cases late in December and into January, is an important development to watch. It is impacting the demand and supply side of the Australian economy,” noted Ms Allen.
“We can see from our high frequency credit and debit card data there does appear to be a fall in spending in January, with spending on services more impacted than goods spending.”
According to CBA economist Stephen Wu, spending so far in January was 3 per cent lower than would be expected otherwise.
“With a large number of people in isolation we have seen spending on services slow sharply. However, spending on goods has held up well,” he said.
“Online spending growth remains firm, while in-store spending is a little lower.”
These findings were also reflected in recent data released by ANZ, which recorded a decline in spending overall and a shift to online spending for both dining and non-food retailing.
Mr Wu said that spending on transport and recreation was down, while spending on eating out remained broadly steady.
“Given the number of COVID cases, spending on medical and healthcare has been strong over recent weeks,” he noted.
“This category includes spending in pharmacies. Purchases of rapid antigen tests, pain relief and other supplies to help with the virus is likely supporting spending in this category.”
Western Australia was highlighted as an exception to the lower levels of spending seen elsewhere, with strong spending across a number of categories, according to CBA.

ANZ senior economist Adelaide Timbrell said that the decline was greater than had been seen in previous years and noted that spending might remain low in the future in light of recent weaker consumer confidence figures.
“Entertainment and travel spending has continued to drift down, while groceries have improved and non-food retailing and dining has stayed somewhat stable at low levels through January,” she said.
Alongside the overall decline in spending, ANZ also found that Australians were shifting their spending online for both dining and non-food retailing, but not quite to the same levels seen previously.
Over 10 per cent of dining and takeaway spending during the first half of January occurred online, according to the bank’s data, well above the 4 per cent seen pre-pandemic but down from the 12 to 14 per cent share recorded during lockdowns.
Additionally, 25 per cent of non-food retailing occurred online in the first half of the month, up from the 20 per cent seen recently outside of lockdown periods but still below the 40 per cent peak reached in the Delta lockdowns.
In a recent survey of online shopping habits, enterprise marketplace platform Mirakl found that online marketplaces, in particular, had seen a surge in popularity during the pandemic.
Forty-three per cent of Australian consumers said they shopped exclusively or a lot on marketplaces during 2021, up from 26 per cent in 2019, and 92 per cent expected to maintain or increase their marketplace usage in the future.
“The onset of the pandemic accelerated many changes in consumer behaviours that were already in place, with consumers turning to eCommerce options that were more convenient, faster, more reliable, and accessible on the run or from the comfort of their own home,” said Mirakl co-chief executive and co-founder Adrien Nussenbaum.
Australians conducted 33 per cent of their online shopping through marketplaces, and 60 per cent said online marketplaces were the most convenient way to shop today.

Data released by ANZ indicated that overall spending in NSW in the week to 2 January was down 25 per cent compared to a year earlier, the biggest drop among all the states.
A fall of 19 per cent was recorded in Victoria and 17 per cent in Queensland, while spending in all other states fell by 15 per cent.
“The drop in spending after the key Christmas and Boxing Day trading was much sharper this year than in previous years,” said ANZ senior economist Adelaide Timbrell.
Dining and travel, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, were among the most impacted spending categories towards the end of 2021.
The bank also found that online shopping had offset some of the impacts of Omicron.
“Higher rates of online spending, particularly for dining, show that both businesses and households are adjusting to iterative lockdowns, movement restrictions and COVID transmission caution by moving more spending online,” said Ms Timbrell.
“This could reduce the impact of iterative lockdown and movement restrictions in 2022 and may be behind Victoria’s smaller fall in spending in late 2021 compared with NSW, since Victorian businesses have more experience with lockdowns.”
Spending on key holiday shopping dates, including Christmas Eve, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, was lower than 2020 but remained above pre-COVID levels, according to ANZ.
Christmas Day spending increased slightly compared to previous years, while spending on Boxing Day fell for the second year in a row.
“Boxing Day sales are likely to keep falling as more households move their end of year sales spending to Black Friday,” noted Ms Timbrell.
The Commonwealth Bank previously forecast that $4 billion would be spent during the Boxing Day sales, while the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan expected a total of $21 billion would be spent between Boxing Day and 15 January.

Spending per person is forecast to be 14 per cent higher than during the Boxing Day sales of 2020, and CBA said its customers were expected to spend 22 per cent more throughout December versus the average of the other months of the year.
“As the nation bounces back, Australians are embracing shopping and are excited to hit the sales,” said CBA executive general manager, everyday banking, Kate Crous.
“This is welcome news for retailers, who are keen to see consumers return after a tough few months, and is also great for consumers hoping to get good value from their shopping.”
Compared to the average monthly spend during the rest of 2021, spending by CBA customers during December is expected to rise 23 per cent for debit cards and 18 per cent for credit cards.
Sixty-nine per cent of Australians plan to pick up a bargain during the sales and not wanting to pay full price was the main reason given.
In-store shopping for sales is planned by 41 per cent of Australians, while 28 per cent expect to do their shopping both in-store and online.
Men intend to spend $646 each during Boxing Day sales compared to $459 for women, while parents of one or two children plan to spend $731.
More than half of Australians are planning a purchase within the category of clothing, apparel and shoes, with technology (36 per cent), home electricals and white goods (31 per cent), and homeware and furniture (29 per cent) also set to be popular categories for purchases.
The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and Roy Morgan earlier predicted that a total of $21 billion would be spent between Boxing Day and 15 January, an increase of 12.6 per cent in 2019 and 2.1 per cent higher than 2020.
“The Boxing Day sales are a key event on the retail calendar and with the states and territories staying committed to their reopening plans, we can look forward to a bumper trading period,” said ARA chief executive Paul Zahra.

Spending in stores and online between Boxing Day and 15 January is forecast to be 12.6 per cent higher than before the pandemic in 2019 and 2.1 per cent higher than in 2020.
“It’s great to see people out and about in great numbers enjoying some retail therapy after another year disrupted by COVID,” said ARA chief executive Paul Zahra.
“We’re continuing to see a lot of pent-up demand for shopping after the Delta lockdowns. We’ve experienced a record-breaking Black Friday with sales exceeding expectations, and that’s provided businesses with strong momentum for this critical trading period.”
Data from NAB indicated that over $8 billion was spent between Black Friday and Cyber Monday last month, beating predictions by more than $2.5 billion.
The National Retail Association previously estimated that $60 billion would be spent during the pre-Christmas shopping period, with a similar forecast made by the ARA.
During the post-Christmas period, the ARA and Roy Morgan expect spending on hospitality will increase by 10.7 per cent to $2.9 billion compared to last year, while spending on clothing, footwear and accessories is expected to rise 6.9 per cent to $1.7 billion.
Food was the only category where spending is expected to fall with a dip of 1 per cent to $8.4 billion.
“Australians have saved up many dollars over the last two years that they’ve been prevented from spending due to lockdowns, border closures and other restrictions on travel,” said Roy Morgan chief executive Michele Levine.
“While there still exists some uncertainty about travel conditions over the next few months, the loosened restrictions around the country do provide an opportunity for retailers looking to maximise their revenues and tap into what is forecast to be a record summer retailing period.”
Among the states and territories, Tasmanians are expected to increase their spending the most compared to 2020, with forecasted growth of 8.6 per cent.
Higher spending is also expected in Victoria (6.6 per cent), Western Australia (3.3 per cent), South Australia (2.9 per cent) and the ACT (1.5 per cent), while spending will remain relatively flat in NSW (0.4 per cent) and fall slightly in the Northern Territory (-0.9 per cent) and Queensland (-2 per cent).
“The Boxing Day sales are a key event on the retail calendar and with the states and territories staying committed to their reopening plans, we can look forward to a bumper trading period,” said Mr Zahra.
“However, challenges remain with staff shortages and ongoing supply chain issues, which may have an impact on the ability of retailers to expediate their financial recovery. We are working closely with government to ensure that any barriers to recovery are solved as quickly as possible.”

The spending splurge during the busy shopping period was more than $2.5 billion higher than anticipated and eclipsed the pre-pandemic record set in 2019 by 8 per cent.
Technology retailers saw the biggest boost in sales, with a rise of 168 per cent compared to 2019. Sales growth was also recorded for footwear (92 per cent), clothing (54 per cent) and jewellery (49 per cent) retailers.
“Business is absolutely up and running again – it was great to see people out and about making the most of bargains as well as spending big online,” said NAB group executive of business and private bank Andrew Irvine.
“It may be a trend adopted from our American friends, but it’s clear that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are now a strong part of the sales calendar here in Australia.”
An estimated $190 million was spent in Victoria, $163 million in NSW and $73 million in Queensland during the four-day shopping frenzy.
Jewellery and watch stores were the best performers online, with sales rising 312 per cent from 2019.
“We’ve talked so much about the pivot to digital but it’s clear that the ground work laid by businesses over the past two years has positioned them well to capitalise on these sales events,” said Mr Irvine.
“For so many of us though, nothing beats the actual experience of walking into a store and being able to try out the product in person.”
ANZ found that spending on Black Friday specifically had dipped 2.2 per cent compared to 2020 but was up 36 per cent in 2019 with “very strong growth” for spending on experiences through ticketing agencies and tour operators.
The bank has forecast a “perfect storm” for consumer spending throughout the rest of the year.
Buy now, pay later provider Klarna said sales volumes through its platform grew 298 per cent on Black Friday and 317 per cent on Cyber Monday compared to last year.
Earlier sales and discounts introduced by some retailers saw volumes spike by 305 per cent in the week surrounding Black Friday (November 22 to 28) versus the same period in 2020.
Australian millennials had a 54 per cent share of purchases made during Black Friday, according to Klarna, while baby boomers had the highest increase in purchases compared to a regular day with a rise of 57 per cent.
The most popular shopping categories for Klarna users were clothing, shoes, jewellery, accessories, leisure, sport and hobbies.
