Aware Super has announced the appointment of Simon Warner as Chief Investment Officer, effective 1 December 2025, following a competitive global search to replace outgoing CIO Damian Graham, who announced his intention to step down in May.
" ["fulltext"]=> string(1858) "Mr Warner, who joined Aware Super in 2023 as Head of Portfolio Management, will lead the fund’s 160-person investment team, which manages $205 billion in member savings across equities, fixed income, infrastructure, property and private equity.
Aware Super Chief Executive Officer Deanne Stewart said Mr Warner’s appointment would ensure the continuity of the fund’s investment strategy and governance frameworks.
“Simon has demonstrated exceptional leadership during his two years at Aware Super, contributing to our track record of delivering outstanding returns for members,” Ms Stewart said.
“He has significant global experience, deep expertise across public and private markets, a strong focus on governance and risk management, and a proven ability to lead large, high-performing teams.”
Ms Stewart said Mr Warner’s leadership would further strengthen Aware Super’s investment capability as it continues to grow.
“As we continue to grow, I am confident that Simon’s leadership will enable us to further strengthen our exceptional in-house investment team’s capability and ensure we’re delivering the best possible outcomes for our members’ retirement savings,” she said.
Prior to joining Aware Super, Mr Warner held a number of executive roles, including global head of public markets at AMP Capital, and global CIO/co-head of global equities and fixed income. He also held senior positions at JP Morgan Chase across London, Singapore and Sydney, including as CIO for Australia and New Zealand.
Mr Warner holds a Global Executive MBA from TRIUM (NYU Stern, LSE and HEC Paris) and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in economics from the London School of Economics. He has served on several boards and is a current director of Women in Banking and Finance.

“Payday Super is a reform that must succeed the first time. If execution falters, workers miss out and employers wear the cost,” Mr Thompson said.
“Employment Hero supports the Bill and is leading in the development of the infrastructure and resources for compliance. Still, the current settings expect employers to bear the full operational and cashflow impacts on day one, while the rest of the system on which employers rely is still being upgraded.”
According to Employment Hero’s modelling, the average small and medium-sized business will require around $124,000 in additional working capital under Payday Super.
Mr Thompson said that with less than 12 months before the deadline and no phase-in period for smaller employers, many remain uncertain about how to comply.
“That’s out of step with past reforms, like STP, FDV leave and Paid Parental Leave that recognise the realities of running a small business,” he said.
He warned that employers could face penalties for delayed payments caused by third-party fund or gateway errors, exposing small businesses to fines and compliance risks beyond their control.
“Payday Super should proceed with two pragmatic safeguards to ensure it succeeds: a short phase-in for the smallest employers and reciprocal obligations on funds to reduce the risk of penalties for businesses for delays they cannot control,” Mr Thompson said.
“These small but practical changes to the Bill will help the reform succeed, protecting workers’ retirement savings while supporting the viability of Australia’s small businesses.”

Ben Thompson, CEO of Employment Hero, expressed his support for the bill while acknowledging the hurdles it presents for SMBs. "Employment Hero welcomes the introduction of the Payday Super bill to the Australian Parliament. With the 1 July 2026 implementation date fast approaching, this legislation provides much-needed clarity and certainty for Australian businesses preparing for one of the most significant payroll and compliance reforms in decades," Thompson stated.
The bill, which aims to enhance payroll compliance, has been met with mixed reactions from the SMB sector. A survey conducted by Employment Hero among its customers reveals that 15% of SMBs are currently unaware of the Payday Super changes. Additionally, 32.5% of businesses indicated they would need to build cash reserves to remain solvent under the new regulations.
One of the more contentious points highlighted by the survey is the potential impact on pay cycles. More than 20% of businesses surveyed suggested they might need to change their pay cycles to accommodate the new superannuation requirements. This prospect is met with resistance from employees, with 84% opposing any changes to their current pay cycles.
Thompson emphasised the importance of practical implementation that takes into account the operational realities facing SMBs. "Employment Hero strongly supports the intention of the reform and has consistently advocated for practical implementation that recognises the realities of how small and medium businesses operate. We’re pleased to see some of the considerations raised with Treasury reflected in the bill and we look forward to continuing to consult as it progresses through Parliament," he noted.
As the deadline approaches, Employment Hero is committed to providing support to SMBs navigating these changes. Thompson highlighted the company's efforts to develop new technological solutions to aid businesses in managing the new requirements efficiently. "Our focus remains on supporting hundreds of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) through these changes with industry-leading technology. We are rapidly developing new solutions within our Employment Operating System to help employers manage Payday Super with ease, accuracy and confidence," he said.
