Rest appoints experienced governance expert to bolster superannuation fund
Rest, one of Australia's largest profit-to-member superannuation funds, has announced the appointment of Ed Waters as the new Company Secretary. Waters, who brings with him over 15 years of extensive experience in governance roles within the financial services industry, is expected to significantly contribute to the fund's mission of simplifying superannuation for its more than two million members.
Tyrone O’Neill, Rest’s Chief Strategy and Corporate Affairs Officer, expressed confidence in Waters' abilities to enhance the fund's governance framework. "Ed is highly focused with a strong commercial mindset and has a proven ability to build effective working relationships across different industries and jurisdictions," said O'Neill. "He is an experienced secretarial and senior legal professional, with more than a decade of in-house experience. His familiarity with profit-to-member super funds and the regulatory environment we operate in are especially valuable. We are delighted to welcome Ed to Rest."
Waters' appointment comes as Rest aims to streamline its operations and improve member experiences in an increasingly complex regulatory landscape. His role will involve overseeing corporate governance and ensuring compliance with industry standards, a task for which he is well-prepared given his impressive track record.
Waters joins Rest from AustralianSuper, where he served as Deputy Company Secretary since 2021. During his tenure, he undertook two stints as Acting Company Secretary in 2022 and 2023, demonstrating his leadership capabilities and deep understanding of the superannuation sector. His experience at AustralianSuper is expected to be invaluable as Rest navigates its strategic goals.
Before his role at AustralianSuper, Waters spent 13 years at Bupa, a global healthcare company, where he held various positions. His tenure culminated in a role as Senior Legal Adviser – Head Office Advisory, where he provided governance and company secretarial support for Bupa’s 13 subsidiary boards in Australia and New Zealand. This experience has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of governance across multiple jurisdictions, further enhancing his suitability for his new role at Rest.

In addition to his corporate roles, Waters has also been actively involved in the non-profit sector, serving as the volunteer Board Secretary for Ready Set since 2020. Ready Set is a charity dedicated to assisting vulnerable job seekers through clothing and career coaching services, helping them return to the workforce. This voluntary position underscores Waters' commitment to community service and his ability to apply his governance expertise in diverse settings.
Waters officially joined Rest on 10 November 2025, marking a new chapter in his career. His appointment is seen as a strategic move by Rest to strengthen its governance framework amidst evolving industry challenges.
The appointment of Waters comes at a pivotal time for Rest, as the fund continues to focus on enhancing its governance structures to better serve its members. With his extensive experience and proven track record, Waters is poised to play a crucial role in driving the fund's strategic initiatives forward.
As Rest continues to evolve in the competitive superannuation landscape, the addition of Waters to its leadership team is expected to bring fresh perspectives and bolster the fund's commitment to delivering value to its members. His expertise in navigating complex regulatory environments and building effective governance frameworks will be instrumental in achieving these objectives.
With Waters at the helm of its governance efforts, Rest is well-positioned to meet the challenges of the future and continue providing exceptional services to its members.
