In a significant move within Australia's superannuation sector, Rest, one of the largest profit-to-member funds in the country, has announced the promotion of Rachel O'Connor to lead its Fixed Income team. This leadership change comes as Tracey Duff, the long-serving head of the Fixed Income team, retires after nearly two decades of service.

Rest promotes Rachel O’Connor to head fixed income team

Rachel O'Connor, who joined Rest in August 2021, has been appointed as the Head of Fixed Income, Credit & Cash. O'Connor's promotion follows her role as the Senior Portfolio Manager, Fixed Income, a position she held since September 2023. Her extensive experience, spanning approximately 30 years in fixed income and cash investments, has positioned her as a natural successor to Duff.

Kiran Singh, Rest’s Head of Listed Assets, expressed confidence in O'Connor's abilities to lead the team. "Rachel has been instrumental in overseeing both our internally and externally managed assets for more than 4 years and made a significant contribution to the asset class’s great long-term track record," Singh stated. He further added, "I’m confident she will continue to build on the strong foundations established by Tracey over the past 20 years and lead it through the next phase of development in support of our 2 million members’ retirement outcomes."

The retirement of Tracey Duff marks the end of an era for Rest. Duff joined the superannuation fund in August 2005 and has been pivotal in leading the Fixed Income team, particularly in managing the internal Australian Fixed Income portfolio. Her leadership has been characterised by strategic thinking and a commitment to fostering a positive organisational culture.

"Tracey has made an immeasurable contribution to Rest. She has been a steady hand, a strategic thinker, a respected leader and most of all, a true culture champion," Singh remarked. He acknowledged the mixed emotions surrounding Duff's departure, saying, "We are very sad to see her go, but also genuinely excited for what lies ahead for her."

Singh also highlighted the strength within Rest’s ranks, noting the seamless transition facilitated by O'Connor’s promotion. "We are incredibly grateful for the legacy she has established. It’s a testament to the expertise within Rest that we can promote someone of Rachel’s calibre to continue this legacy into the future," he said.

O'Connor's career prior to joining Rest is marked by significant roles in portfolio management at several notable financial institutions. Her previous positions included roles at U Ethical Investors, Vanguard, UBS Asset Management, ING Investment Management, and ANZ Investments. This diverse experience has equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of the financial markets, a skill set that will undoubtedly benefit Rest’s members.

The transition in leadership is seen as a strategic move to ensure continuity and growth within Rest's Fixed Income team. O'Connor, based in Melbourne, commenced her new role on 2 March. Her leadership is expected to steer the team through evolving market conditions and continue the focus on delivering robust retirement outcomes for Rest’s members.

As the superannuation industry faces increasing challenges and opportunities, Rest's decision to promote from within underscores its commitment to leveraging internal talent. O'Connor's appointment is not only a testament to her capabilities but also a signal of Rest's forward-thinking approach in maintaining its position as a leader in the superannuation sector.

For Rest’s two million members, the leadership change is anticipated to bring renewed focus on enhancing investment strategies, particularly in fixed income and cash asset classes. With O'Connor at the helm, the Fixed Income team is poised to navigate the complexities of the financial markets while continuing to build on the solid foundation laid by Duff.
