The government has again signalled that changes to superannuation are on the cards as the government fleshes out its plans to reform Australia’s taxation system.
Assistant Treasurer Kelly O’Dwyer said yesterday that the Productivity Commission’s proceedings, which will involve a review into the efficiency of the superannuation system, will not be used as a basis to delay changes to the superannuation system.
“This review is not about delaying change, it’s about making sure that the system is dynamic for the modern world,” said Ms O’Dwyer at the SMSF Association’s national conference in Adelaide.
Superannuation is tipped to a key part of the government’s taxation reform package in the lead up to the federal election.
When compared with other areas of the tax system, superannuation is one of the “biggest and most easily reformable”, said director of tax communications at H&R Block, Mark Chapman.
“Of all the various pots of money that the government could raid to reduce the deficit, superannuation seems to be one of the biggest,” said Mr Chapman.
