6 ways Australia can rebuild beyond the recession
As the nation’s 29 years of economic prosperity comes to an end, a consumer advocate group has explained a six-point plan to use the recession as a way to reshape the economy for the betterment of all Australians.
GetUp has created “The People’s Recovery policy”, a six-point plan to build a society where all our needs are met with secure, well-paid jobs, a place to call home and well-funded services, and where all our energy comes from clean, affordable sources like the sun and wind.
According to GetUp, the policy is designed to ensure everyday people get to transform society and the economy in a way that works better for people with a focus on leaving nobody behind.
GetUp national director Paul Oosting believes the crisis has shown that no issue is too big or too hard for bold reform.
“If we make the right decisions, we can create hundreds of thousands of good jobs, ensure everyone has an income they can live on, set young people up for the future and transition to a clean energy economy,” he said

Further, Mr Oosting highlighted the importance of having the public decide the society they want to build post-COVID-19.
“The public deserve much more of a say in how we recover from both the bushfires and coronavirus crises, to make sure our leaders put the public interest first at this once in a lifetime opportunity for renewal.
“Everyday people across the country are discussing their hopes for a positive recovery with a vision that keeps the life-changing reforms introduced during the coronavirus crisis, invests in clean renewable energy and creates jobs for all. That’s the leadership people across the country are calling for,” Mr Oosting concluded.
The six points include:
-
Job guarantee: A well-paid job for everyone who wants it
-
Universal lifelong education and retraining
-
Guaranteed basic income
-
A roof over everyone’s head
-
Household clean energy guarantee
-
A public interest banking system
