Australia's entrepreneurial landscape is witnessing a remarkable transformation, with the latest data from the Lawpath New Business Index highlighting a significant surge in new business registrations across both metropolitan and regional centres in September 2025. This surge underscores a robust growth trajectory in the small business sector, with several key postcodes demonstrating double-digit increases in entrepreneurial activities.

New Business Boom: Australia’s Top Ten Suburbs Lead Entrepreneurial Growth

Among the top performers are Point Cook (VIC 3030), Parramatta (NSW 2150), and Liverpool (NSW 2170), which are leading the charge in new business creation. These suburbs, along with Werribee (VIC 3030), Melbourne CBD (VIC 3000), Newcastle (NSW 2300), Toowoomba (QLD 4350), Dandenong (VIC 3175), Blacktown (NSW 2148), and Rockingham (WA 6168), together accounted for over 5,500 new business registrations in September alone. This impressive figure highlights the burgeoning strength of Australia's suburban and regional economies.

The Lawpath Index attributes this entrepreneurial boom to a confluence of factors, including affordability, infrastructure investment, and cultural diversity. Suburbs and regional hubs such as Werribee, Point Cook, and Newcastle are increasingly becoming attractive entry points for entrepreneurs who are priced out of central business district (CBD) locations. The continued migration and population growth in these areas are driving demand for a wide range of services, from healthcare and construction to hospitality and education.

Demographic trends are also playing a pivotal role in this entrepreneurial surge. Notably, entrepreneurs aged 18–24 have shown the fastest growth, with a remarkable 44% increase year-on-year. This signals a significant influx of younger founders into the market, eager to make their mark. Meanwhile, the 30–34 and 40–44 age brackets have also seen substantial growth, with increases of 29% and 32% respectively. This indicates that both early-career professionals and mid-career Australians are actively contributing to the small business boom.

The multicultural nature of Australia's startup landscape is further evidenced by the diverse backgrounds of new business owners. India-born and Pakistan-born founders have recorded year-on-year growth of 27% and 35% respectively, while New Zealand and Vietnam-born founders have seen impressive increases of 72% and 37%. Australian-born founders continue to play a significant role, making up around 35% of all new business owners. This diversity reflects the dynamic and inclusive nature of Australia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

"Entrepreneurship in Australia is decentralising," said Tom Willis, CMO and co-founder of Lawpath. "The next generation of business founders is emerging from communities like Werribee, Newcastle, and Parramatta: places that combine opportunity, affordability, and connection."

The rise in entrepreneurial activity is not confined to traditional business hubs but is spreading across the nation, fuelled by the unique advantages offered by suburban and regional areas. These areas provide a fertile ground for startups, with lower operating costs and a supportive community environment that fosters innovation and growth.

The Lawpath New Business Index, which tracks ABN, ACN, and GST registrations nationwide, serves as a valuable barometer of entrepreneurial activity across Australia. It highlights the evolving nature of the business landscape and the shifting dynamics that are propelling growth in unexpected areas.

As Australia continues to embrace its multicultural identity and leverages the strengths of its diverse population, the small business sector is poised for further expansion. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well, driven by a new generation of founders who are reshaping the economic landscape of the nation.

With ongoing infrastructure investments and a focus on fostering inclusive growth, Australia is well-positioned to maintain its momentum in the small business sector. The emerging trends highlighted by the Lawpath Index offer a glimpse into the future of entrepreneurship in Australia, where opportunity and innovation know no bounds.
