Government calls on seniors to speak up on aged care staffing
The Australian government is asking senior Australians, their families, aged care staff and community members to have their say on aged care staffing.
On Tuesday, Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt said he wanted to remind all interested Aussies to voice their opinion on the staffing structures at aged care homes around the country.
“Ensuring Australian aged care has a strong supply of appropriately trained, skilled and resourced staff is a top priority,” Mr Wyatt said.
“To ensure adequate staffing and skills, I announced a workforce taskforce last November which is due to produce Australia’s first aged care workforce strategy by July.
“This will be critical for provision of the care our senior Australians deserve, with predictions the aged care workforce will need to grow from the current 360,000 to almost one million by 2050.”
With a $2 million budget, the workforce taskforce is set to “support detailed consultation and research” across Australia. It is now in the public consultation phase.
“I urge senior Australians, their families, community members and aged care staff to get involved by going to the taskforce’s online consultation hub and completing the survey,” Mr Wyatt said.
Public submissions are open until 16 March, and those interested can either participate in the online survey at the Aged Care Workforce Strategy’s consultation hub, or by sharing their thoughts with the current national review of the aged care workforce.
The Aged Care Workforce Strategy Taskforce is working to grow and sustain the aged care workforce, and will put emphasis on workforce size and structure, managing changes in requirements and growth, a mix of occupations and roles and the different workforce needs for corresponding care settings and market catchments.
Supply, retention and up-skilling, as well as providers’ capacity as employers, are also under the spotlight.
The questionnaire asks people to share their thoughts on what they hope the strategy can change, the perceived challenges on the horizon for aged care and what is working well.
It also asks which areas of “knowledge, skills and capability” need to improved and what is needed to improve them.
