Will your frequent flyer status be impacted by COVID?
In the latest bid to kick-start the travel industry post-lockdowns, Australia’s largest airline has announced that it is rewarding its frequent flyers by extending their status.
Following the stand-down of 2,500 workers last week, Qantas is set to try and recoup its losses through its frequent flyers.
In a statement released this week, the national carrier announced a fourth extension of its frequent flyer status. Qantas has made the same offer it did in November last year, allowing its platinum one, platinum, gold and silver members to hold on to their status until at least June 2023, provided they book one eligible flight before their current membership year ends.
The targeted approach is set to work, with Qantas’ own data showing that 96 per cent of its frequent flyer customers intend to travel over the next 12 months.
According to the airline, the offer is targeted at frequent flyers who would otherwise see perks such as the Qantas lounge access, extra baggage allowance, priority airline privileges and potential seat upgrades disappear.
Qantas Loyalty chief executive Olivia Wirth said the airline acknowledges the highly sought-after status and the frequent travel required in order to maintain membership.
“Our members have remained highly engaged with the program even in the midst of a global pandemic,” the chief executive said.
“We’ve seen bookings spike when restrictions have eased after previous outbreaks, and we’re confident we’ll see the same when borders reopen this time.”
Qantas is extending the current offer so that all Australian and New Zealand-based tiered members (silver and above) with a membership year ending in or before June 2022 will be able to maintain their status for another year by booking an eligible flight prior to their membership year end, for travel until June 2022.
