Australians are set to splash the cash for mum this Mother’s Day, albeit on the wrong gift, new consumer spending data has revealed.

Survey data from CommBank Rewards showed that Australian mums want a day out at the spa, but instead are likely to get flowers.

CBA executive general manager, everyday banking, Kate Crous said mothers are hoping to be pampered on Mother’s Day.

“Mother’s Day is a time for extra indulging and self-care. From the research, we can see mums want an experience including being treated and pampered with options like enjoying a relaxing spa day or being taken out for lunch or dinner.”

Instead, florists are tipped to have booming business, with the average Australian saying they will spend $74 buying flowers for mum on Sunday.

“For gift giving, there are so many options online and in-store for your loved ones. We know people want to spoil their mum and be money-savvy at the same time,” Ms Crous said.

The research showed that Australians are savvy shoppers, with 46 per cent of people regularly hunting for deals, cashback or reward points.

“At the end of the day, quality time is the obvious winner on Mother’s Day, with most mums favouring relationships and experiences over things. So, while gifts are certainly a perk, the feeling of togetherness and being with family is a valued part of how mums want to spend the day,” Ms Crous said.

According to the CommBank Rewards research, Australian mums want to spend the day by having quality time together with their children. Around six in 10 mothers rate this as their first choice, followed by food – whether eating out, ordering in or having someone cook for them.
