AI investment and responsible AI settings take centre stage in Australia
In a move that underscores the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the Australian economy, the government has announced increased funding for the AI Accelerator program and the establishment of the AI Safety Institute. These initiatives aim to bolster AI capabilities across industries while ensuring responsible use through regulatory frameworks. Industry leaders have welcomed these measures, highlighting the potential for AI to revolutionise business operations and enhance competitiveness on a global scale.
Martin Herbst, CEO of JobAdder, emphasised the transformative impact of AI on Australian businesses, particularly in the recruitment sector. "AI is reshaping how Australian businesses compete, both for talent and for market share. It’s great to see the AI Safety Institute and a funding bump for the AI Accelerator program, alongside regulatory frameworks through the AI Employment and Workplaces Forum," Herbst stated. He noted that clear frameworks provide companies with the confidence to invest, knowing that the regulatory landscape will remain stable. "That certainty matters for global competitiveness. Without it, Australian businesses risk falling behind while other countries push ahead," he added.
Herbst highlighted the rapid adoption of AI in recruitment, reporting a 17% increase in AI use over the past year, with 81% of recruiters now utilising these tools. "For jobseekers, that means faster responses and better matching. For employers, it means less admin burden and quicker access to the right candidates," he explained. Herbst believes that government backing and sensible guardrails could further accelerate AI adoption across various sectors, enhancing efficiency and productivity.
Felicia Coco, Founder of Pressto AI, echoed similar sentiments regarding the potential of AI to transform industries. "Any investment in Australia's AI capabilities is welcome. We're at a point where AI is reshaping how every industry operates, and Australia can either embrace it or fall behind," Coco remarked. She stressed the importance of striking a balance between fostering innovation and avoiding excessive regulatory constraints. "What matters is getting the balance right: supporting innovation without wrapping it in so much red tape that nothing actually gets built," Coco warned. She emphasised that while responsible AI is crucial, it should not become a barrier to progress. "The AI Employment and Workplaces Forum will need to strike that balance carefully," she concluded.
The establishment of the AI Safety Institute is seen as a significant step towards ensuring responsible AI development and deployment. It aims to address concerns about ethical considerations and potential risks associated with AI technologies. By providing a platform for dialogue and collaboration, the institute seeks to foster a culture of responsibility and accountability in AI practices.

The AI Accelerator program, with its increased funding, is expected to support startups and established companies in developing innovative AI solutions. This initiative aligns with the government's broader strategy to position Australia as a leader in AI technology and innovation. By nurturing a vibrant AI ecosystem, the program aims to attract talent and investment, ultimately driving economic growth and job creation.
The AI Employment and Workplaces Forum will play a crucial role in shaping the regulatory landscape for AI in Australia. By bringing together industry stakeholders, policymakers, and experts, the forum aims to develop guidelines and standards that promote responsible AI use while encouraging innovation. This collaborative approach seeks to address the unique challenges and opportunities presented by AI in various sectors, from recruitment to healthcare and beyond.
As Australia embraces the potential of AI, industry leaders are optimistic about the future. They recognise the need for a balanced approach that supports innovation while ensuring ethical and responsible practices. With government backing and a commitment to clear regulatory frameworks, Australia is poised to harness the power of AI to drive economic growth and enhance competitiveness on the global stage.
