Melbourne’s lockdown ends tomorrow
As announced, Melbourne will begin its path out of lockdown as of 11.59pm Thursday evening, but some restrictions will remain.
Acting Premier James Merlino said the high COVID-19 testing and vaccination numbers throughout the state had granted the leeway necessary to ease the shutdown that has gripped Melbourne for the past fortnight.
"Everybody should be very proud of what we have all achieved together," he said.
But, despite announcing the end of lockdown, some businesses in Melbourne will remain closed, this included gyms, amusement parks, dance studios and nightclubs.
On the upside, the five reasons to leave home will be dropped, while offices will be able to have a capacity of 25 per cent or cap of ten, whichever is greater.
Retail too is set to reopen, but with density limits of one person per four square metres.
“From 11:59pm tomorrow night, metropolitan Melbourne will move to most of the same settings currently in place across regional Victoria, and regional Victoria will move further towards further easing,” the Premier said.
Acknowledging also the impacts of the lockdown on mental health, Mr Merlino said “the whole pandemic has had an impact on mental health.”
“I’ve been really upfront about that. We delivered the biggest investment in mental health that this nation has ever seen: $3.8 billion.”
From tomorrow Victorians will be able to play golf, however they will still not be allowed to enter gyms.
"For gyms, for example in Melbourne, we need a further 7 days where they will be closed and to support them, we have provided this top-up funding."
"Our expectation is Thursday next week, Thursday night next week we will be able to have our gyms open, as they will be able to from Thursday night this week in regional Victoria."
