Prime Minister Scott Morrison has revealed that the Council of Australian Governments is no more, with national federation reform to see the national cabinet work at “creating jobs out of the back of this crisis”.

Scott Morrison

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) system is “no more”, Mr Morrison stated.

“It will be replaced by a completely new system, and that new system is focused on the success that has been yielded by the operation of the national cabinet.”

The national cabinet was originally established on 13 March 2020 to coordinate a national response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new system “will be driven by a singular agenda, and that is to create jobs”.

According to the Prime Minister, the reform will see the national cabinet continuing to meet on a fortnightly basis throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and revert to monthly meetings thereafter.

It comes after Mr Morrison’s announcement earlier this week of a “JobMaker” plan for economic recovery.

More to come.
