A new study by international asset management company Managing Partners Group (MPG) has found that more than three-quarters (78%) of institutional investors and wealth managers plan to increase their allocations to illiquid assets over the next five years, with 10% expecting to make significant increases.
The survey, which included global institutional investors and wealth managers with €107 billion in assets under management, also revealed that 10% of respondents intend to reduce their allocations to illiquid assets over the next five years, while 11% will maintain their current allocations.
Current allocations to illiquid assets among the surveyed investors typically ranged between 11% and 25%, with 60% of respondents falling within this range. Approximately 16% of investors allocate between 25% and 50% of their portfolios to illiquid assets, while just under a quarter (24%) dedicate up to 10% to illiquids.
When asked about the additional premium required to invest in illiquid assets, a majority (51%) of investors indicated they need a 1.5% to 2% per annum premium. Nearly a fifth (18%) require a premium between 2% and 2.5% per year, while the same proportion seeks a 1% to 1.5% premium. Around 13% of respondents stated that an illiquidity premium of 0.5% to 1% per annum is necessary.
Jeremy Leach, Chief Executive Officer of Managing Partners Group, commented on the findings, saying, "Investors increasingly appreciate the long-term return potential from holding illiquid assets in their portfolio. Investing in Life Settlement funds, for example, which are life insurance policies that have been sold by the original owners at a discount to their fixed maturity value and are institutionally traded through a highly regulated secondary market, offer the opportunity for consistent outperformance as well as helping to diversify portfolios."
MPG's High Protection Fund, which invests in a portfolio of Life Settlements with an average Risk Rating of A+ from AM Best, delivered net annualised returns of 9.31% in 2023 and 219.72% since its launch in 2009. The fund attracted net inflows of $20 million last year and aims to achieve smooth, predictable investment returns of between 8% and 9% per annum, net of fees.
MPG is a multi-disciplined investment house that specialises in creating, managing, and administering regulated mutual funds and issuers of asset-backed securities for SMEs, financial institutions, and sophisticated investors. The company currently manages two funds with a combined gross value of $500 million.

It finds that unemployment rates would be significantly higher across all age groups if individuals who search for work "passively", such as sending off job applications without actively browsing online, were included. This increase is more pronounced for young Australians, with the unemployment rate rising by about two percentage points.
However, the research suggests that even though the measured unemployment rate would be higher under this broader definition, it does not necessarily mean the Reserve Bank would need to change its approach to monetary policy.
Zachary Hayward, pre-doctoral economist at the e61 Institute and author of the study, said, "The reason this definition may matter for Reserve Bank policy is if the new measure aligned more closely with the economic cycle. If it did, policy responses that ignored these measures would respond slowly to rising or falling inflation – exacerbating cost of living shocks during booms and generating unnecessary job loss during downturns."
The data shows that the new unemployment measure moves in a very similar way to the standard definition over the economic cycle, with only slightly wider gaps during the Global Financial Crisis and the end of the mining boom. "Ultimately, it adds little to no useful information about the economic cycle," Hayward said.
e61 CEO Michael Brennan noted that while it's always good to consider what the current definition might miss, "the overriding issue is what information the measure conveys, and the current ABS definition does a good job of shedding light on the strength of the labour market and the economic cycle."
The study highlights that while the current measure of unemployment may not capture all job seekers, it remains largely appropriate for assessing monetary policy and the economic cycle. However, it also underscores that at any given time, there are more individuals searching for work than headline figures suggest, indicating that barriers to labour market entry affect more people than commonly assumed.

Curt Jacques, Vanguard Australia's Head of Product Offer, said that keeping costs low is an important way for the company to help investors achieve their goals. Over the past decade, Vanguard has achieved more than 40 fee reductions for its Australian investors across its range of products and services.
Mr Jacques noted that this fee change may be beneficial for investors looking to move out of cash holdings and capture low-cost, durable, and resilient yields, with the potential for additional price appreciation as interest rates eventually decline.
"Following the Reserve Bank of Australia keeping rates on hold last week and removing their tightening bias, our outlook for bonds remains positive and we expect interest rates to ultimately settle at levels above those in recent memory," he added.
VGB is currently the largest, most liquid, and most diversified Australian government bond ETF listed on the ASX, providing exposure to high-quality, income-generating bonds issued by the Commonwealth Government of Australia, Australian State Government authorities, and treasury corporations, according to Bloomberg and the ASX Investment Products monthly report for the last 12 months to February 2024.

regulation and governance solutions.
" ["fulltext"]=> string(2826) "The research, which surveyed fund managers in 10 countries collectively managing $1.6 trillion, found that 99% of respondents believe it will become much harder to navigate regulatory complexities over the next two years.
In response, 91% of fund managers expect to make greater use of third-party service providers for their fund administration functions in the next 12 months, with 41% anticipating a dramatic increase and 50% expecting a slight increase.
John Donohoe, Group CEO at Carne Group, commented: "Many asset managers are struggling with the impact of the continually increasing regulatory burden, the costs to their businesses and impact on investor returns. To address this, they are making greater use of third-party specialist providers, enabling them to speed up their time to revenue and to focus on what matters most... product innovation, delivering investment performance and raising assets."
The study identified the top three reasons for the increased outsourcing as difficulty in recruiting appropriate staff, the growing burden of regulation, and operating in more jurisdictions.
Furthermore, 79% of fund managers surveyed expect the level of outsourcing of fund management company administration to third parties to increase over the next three years, primarily to enable the launch of different product sets, increase speed to market, and deliver stronger fiduciary management of funds.
A separate global study by Carne Group with wealth managers and institutional investors managing $1.7 trillion in assets found that 94% believe managing the regulatory environment will become much harder between now and 2026, with 64% planning to outsource more administrative functions to third-party service providers in the next 12 months.
As outsourcing levels rise, the fund management sector can focus more on innovation. The main factors driving innovation, according to the surveyed fund managers, are advances in technology, increased use of alternative data, and greater insight into the performance of alternative asset classes in different environments.

As this gathers pace, the winners will be those that find effective ways to navigate the changing environment. " ["fulltext"]=> string(2354) "The study, which surveyed institutional investors and wealth managers in the US, UK, Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, and the United Arab Emirates who collectively manage around $816 billion in assets, found that nearly nine out of 10 (87%) believe digital assets have an important role to play in diversified investment portfolios. Half of the respondents (50%) said digital assets should represent a moderate portion of portfolios.
The research also found that 23% of those surveyed believe digital assets should only represent a small part of portfolios, while 16% say they should form a significant part of portfolios. Around 10% said digital assets should only be included in diversified investment portfolios for specific investment strategies.
The acceptance of the role of digital assets in diversified investment portfolios reflects changing views among institutional investors and wealth managers. This is also reflected in forecasts of the launch of new digital asset funds, with nearly two out of three (63%) respondents expecting a rise in the number of new funds focusing on digital assets and cryptocurrencies over the next 12 months, and 24% forecasting a dramatic increase. Only 6% expect a slight decrease in the number of funds in the next 12 months.

Workers in larger companies (500-1000 employees) also feel particularly vulnerable (74.33%), in contrast to self-employed workers (42.47%) and those in smaller companies (below 25 employees, 45.38%).
AI's impact on job security is a major concern for many respondents, with 54.58% anticipating that it will affect their job security within the next five years. Sectors that rely heavily on computer use, such as Software (67.44%), Finance (67.57%), and Human Resources (64.29%), express high levels of concern, while people in sectors that involve more human-to-human interaction, such as education (43.04%) and real estate (44.68%), are least concerned.
The survey also found that 29.17% of full-time tech workers don't have enough savings to support them until they find a new job if faced with job loss. With an estimated 3 million U.S. residents working in tech, this constitutes almost a million people.
While the proliferation of AI is set to disrupt many jobs, it is also expected to create new opportunities. Experts suggest that workers who learn to use AI now may have an easier time taking advantage of these new positions. Upskilling in AI, honing soft skills, building strong relationships with colleagues, and cultivating unique expertise are some of the ways workers can safeguard against unemployment in the face of AI advancement.
