One of Australia’s major super funds has launched an offering aimed at self-managed super fund members.

David Elia

Industry fund Hostplus has developed a number of options which it believes will help SMSF investors pool their funds with the industry super fund and invest as unit holders in some of the industry super funds’ main options.

The initial launch will cover six out of 23 investment options including its flagship balanced option.

Hostplus’ chief executive, David Elia, believes this will help provide simple and flexible investment solutions for SMSF investors seeking to invest alongside a major APRA-regulated fund to access distinctive assets ordinarily available to retail investors.

Hostplus suggests that ATO data has consistently shown that SMSFs on average underperform compared with APRA-regulated funds, in particular industry super funds.

“We are excited and pleased to formally announce and launch this innovative investment opportunity for SMSFs that we believe will allow them to benefit from a best-of-both-worlds approach to investment for their retirement,” Mr Elia said.

Hostplus has stated this is an Australian first and is an innovative and practical demonstration of how two of Australia’s largest superannuation and pension sectors can work together for mutual benefit.
