Australia’s employment reaches new milestone

Stats released by Roy Morgan showed that there are now a record number of Australians in the workforce, with 13.29 million people employed as of April.

Unemployment has now dropped to its lowest levels since the pandemic began, with 542,000 Aussies rejoining the workforce in March, largely driven by part-time work increasing.

However, despite strong growth in employment, underemployment continues to hamper workers, with the number of Aussies looking for more work increasing by 268,000 people in April.

Roy Morgan’s CEO, Michele Levine, said the sharp reduction in unemployment figures in April further justifies the government’s ending of the JobKeeper wage subsidy.

Australia’s employment reaches new milestone

“Australia’s employment markets have powered through the end of the federal government’s $90 billion JobKeeper wage subsidy program, with employment increasing by 542,000 in April to a new record high of 13,291,000 – up 420,000 on the employment numbers in early March 2020.

For the second straight month, unemployment dropped in all six states in April.

States with the largest increases in new jobs are Queensland (up 256,000) and NSW (up 152,000).

A look at the trends on a state-based level showed that unemployment was lowest in Victoria and Western Australia following the record-breaking state election victory by WA Premier Mark McGowan.

Ms Levine noted, “Despite the removal of government support at the end of March, the unemployment rates in all six states are now below 10 per cent or the first time in nearly a decade since November 2011” when the mining boom drove employment.
