In a significant leap forward for Australia's payroll and superannuation systems, Employment Hero, in collaboration with Zepto and OZEDI, has successfully processed the country's first payroll-embedded super-clearing payment. The introduction of HeroClear marks a transformative shift in how superannuation payments are handled. By embedding the super-clearing and validation process within payroll systems, HeroClear offers instantaneous confirmations, reduces errors, and provides a comprehensive audit trail. This innovation eliminates the need for traditional clearing houses, which often require cumbersome file uploads, portal navigation, and manual reconciliations. 

Rob Dunn, General Manager of Benefits and Superannuation at Employment Hero, hailed the development as a turning point for payroll and superannuation in the country. "We’re incredibly proud to deliver this Australian first and show what modern, embedded super infrastructure makes possible. Fully embedding clearing into payroll is one of the most effective ways to reduce the time and cost of managing super payments. It’s a clear signal we’re supporting employers through one of the most significant payroll changes in decades," he stated.

The successful implementation of HeroClear is a testament to the collaborative efforts between Employment Hero, Zepto, and OZEDI. Chris Jewell, President and Co-Founder of Zepto, emphasised the significance of this achievement. "Seeing Employment Hero process its first PayTo and super contributions through HeroClear just weeks after the legislation came into effect is a remarkable milestone. The speed and reliability delivered over the NPP show the power of real-time infrastructure, and Zepto’s API-led platform builds on that foundation with fast integration, instant settlement and full transparency," Jewell commented.

The benefits of HeroClear are already being realised by businesses participating in the beta phase. Deborah Kerr, a beta customer from Chesterton Customseal, shared her experience with the new system. "HeroClear picked up a critical fund error that our existing system missed. If it hadn’t flagged it, our super payment would have failed, but instead we fixed it instantly and everything went through smoothly. It was fast, simple and gave us confidence straight away," Kerr explained.

David Field, Director of OZEDI, also expressed his enthusiasm for the new system, highlighting the importance of real-time payments. "It’s been incredible to be part of such a collaborative and fast delivery and to see the majority of payments to superannuation funds made with Zepto over the New Payments Platform (NPP). Employers really value the instant, date-and time-stamped receipt generated by the receiving bank account," Field noted.

The implementation of HeroClear is set to deliver substantial benefits at scale. Employment Hero's payroll system processes approximately A$120 billion in wages and superannuation contributions annually for over 350,000 businesses. The integration of HeroClear within this framework promises to streamline operations and enhance compliance with the upcoming regulatory requirements.

As the 1 July 2026 deadline approaches, Employment Hero is committed to ensuring that all its Employment OS and Payroll customers are well-prepared for the changes. This new platform is designed to assist businesses in meeting the forthcoming Payday Super obligations, ultimately supporting improved financial outcomes for its more than two million members.

The Rest Pay solution is specifically tailored for the upcoming Payday Super requirements, which will mandate that employers pay their employees' superannuation contributions concurrently with their wages for each pay cycle. This change is set to take effect from 1 July 2026, as part of reforms announced in the Federal Budget in May 2023 and passed by Federal Parliament in November 2025.

Simone Van Veen, Rest’s Chief Member Officer, emphasised the transformative potential of the new platform. "Rest Pay aims to take the hassle out of making super payments. It’s easy to use, built with market-leading security, and helps employers meet upcoming Payday Super requirements without extra stress," she explained. Van Veen highlighted that the platform is designed to ensure that businesses can pay super accurately and on time, thus maintaining compliance while providing members with confidence that their super contributions will reach their accounts as scheduled.

The introduction of Rest Pay is expected to facilitate faster growth of super balances for members by unlocking the power of compounding returns through more frequent contributions. "It supports businesses to pay super accurately and on time so they stay compliant, while giving members confidence that their super is on track to reach their account when it should," Van Veen added.

Rest Pay's features are tailored to simplify superannuation contributions for employers of all sizes. The platform reduces errors, streamlines refund processing, and offers automated reminders alongside round-the-clock support to help employers stay on track. Moreover, planned payroll integration is set to further enhance efficiency. "Rest Pay is a key part of Rest’s commitment to simplifying super administration for business, while supporting retirement outcomes for our members," Van Veen noted.

The rollout of Rest Pay is currently underway, targeting employers who already use Rest’s administrator’s existing clearing house. The service is available at no cost for Rest default employers. By early next year, Rest plans to extend access to more than 300,000 other employers who pay super to a Rest member, with new employers being able to register their interest via the Rest website.

The development of Rest Pay was a collaborative effort over the past 18 months, involving Rest’s administrator MUFG Retirement Solutions and tech company Wrkr. The platform was shaped by direct feedback from employers, ensuring that its features meet the practical needs of businesses. A successful pilot program demonstrated that employers valued the platform’s intuitive interface and usability, reinforcing Rest's decision to proceed with the broader rollout.

The upcoming Payday Super requirements represent a significant shift in how superannuation contributions are managed in Australia. Currently, employers are required to pay Superannuation Guarantee contributions quarterly. The new regulations will necessitate more frequent payments, aligning super contributions with the regular pay cycle of employees. A recent survey conducted by MFS Investment Management® has shed light on the ongoing uncertainty faced by many Australians regarding their retirement plans. Despite a slight increase in confidence compared to the previous year, a significant portion of Australians remain unsure about their ability to retire comfortably.

The 2025 MFS Global Retirement Survey, which included 700 Australian retirement plan members and over 300 retirees from Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom, revealed that only 39% of Australian superannuation members felt "very or extremely confident" about retiring at their desired age. Among retirees, just 45% expressed confidence that their assets would provide sufficient cashflow throughout retirement.

The survey results highlight a persistent concern among Australians, as a growing number of individuals express doubts about their retirement prospects. Notably, 38% of members now believe they will not be able to retire, up from 28% last year. Additionally, 64% expect to work longer than initially planned, marking a four-percentage-point increase from the previous year.

Josh Barton, senior managing director and head of Australia and New Zealand at MFS Investment Management, commented on these findings, stating, "While it's natural for financial concerns to prompt adjustments, it's crucial for investors to stay focused on long-term goals. Remaining invested over the long term allows members to benefit from compounding returns and ride out market fluctuations, ultimately helping secure a more stable retirement."

The survey also revealed that three-quarters of super fund members acknowledged the need to save more for retirement than originally planned. This reinforces the notion that saving for the future remains a leading financial concern for many Australians. Housing costs have now surpassed day-to-day living expenses as the top financial worry, closely followed by the impact of inflation on purchasing power. In response, 33% of members adjusted their retirement investments over the past year, up from 25% in 2024.

Despite the prevailing uncertainty, Australians continue to rely on various resources for retirement planning. Super funds remain the most relied-upon source of advice, with 54% of participants turning to them. Additionally, Australians seek guidance from financial planners, the financial media, online investment services, and family members and friends. Peers and coworkers also play a role in helping individuals make retirement planning decisions.

The survey also highlighted a growing enthusiasm for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) options within super funds. Despite low confidence in retirement readiness, an increasing number of Australians are seeking more ESG investment options in their retirement plans. An impressive 81% expressed interest in ESG options, up from 73% in 2024. Gen Zers were particularly enthusiastic, with interest rising from 75% last year to 97%. Millennials also showed increased interest, rising from 78% to 90%, while Boomers' interest climbed from 62% to 73%. However, Gen X bucked the trend, with interest slightly declining from 71% to 68%.

In light of these findings, Barton noted, "It's encouraging to see conviction improve among members and retirees, yet our study shows that most Australians remain unsure about their journey, and that despite higher mandated and incentivised contributions, cost-of-living pressures continue to weigh heavily on members."

He added, "Younger generations seeking advice earlier and adopting digital tools is a positive sign for improving retirement confidence and creating a smoother retirement journey, especially as high-quality advice models and digital innovations come together."

As Australians navigate the complexities of retirement planning, the survey underscores the importance of staying informed and making strategic adjustments to secure a more stable financial future.

In a bid to enhance retirement outcomes for Australians, a recent whitepaper by Industry Fund Services, in collaboration with Challenger, has highlighted the importance of simplifying retirement advice frameworks. The research underscores how reframing advice can address behavioural biases that often hinder effective retirement planning.

The study identifies five key behavioural biases that complicate long-term decision-making in retirement planning. Among these are the choice paradox and framing, which leave individuals overwhelmed by the multitude of options and complexities, and temporal discounting, where immediate gains are prioritised over long-term security. Loss aversion, the tendency to feel losses more acutely than gains, also plays a significant role in decision-making.

Behavioural Scientist Dan Monheit commented on the findings, emphasising the critical role of addressing these biases. "Financial advisers cannot avoid influencing preferences. Every aspect of an interaction, from the order options are presented to the way risks and rewards are framed, shapes outcomes," Mr Monheit said. He added, "This presents a significant opportunity to remove complexity and improve the advice experience. By framing choices in a way that aligns with people’s underlying preferences - not in response to overwhelming information - they’re more likely to make confident, informed decisions."

The whitepaper suggests that choice architecture, a concept that structures options more effectively, can be instrumental in retirement income planning. This approach is crucial as retirees must balance maximising income, accessing funds, and maintaining sustainability. Advisers are encouraged to act as Choice Architects by employing simple language and visuals, narrowing decision-making, and reframing discussions to focus on benefits.

Adrian Gervasoni, Executive Manager of Advice Services at Industry Fund Services, highlighted the evolving role of advisers in this landscape. "Retirement planning is about more than just financial modelling - it's about helping retirees make confident decisions in the face of uncertainty," Mr Gervasoni remarked. He further explained, "Through a diligent approach to choice architecture we can put the retiree in the driver's seat. We want to move the conversation from product features and benefits to focus on consumer preferences, such as certainty and flexibility. Ultimately, the goal is to deliver greater confidence when entering into retirement."

Default bias, where individuals instinctively choose more familiar options, is another challenge in retirement planning. This bias can affect both advisers and retirees. "Advice is a human-centric process, filled with emotions and biases that influence the options we present and the way information is understood," Mr Gervasoni noted. He stressed the importance of shifting focus from familiar options, like account-based pensions, to more sustainable and secure retirement income solutions.

The research led to the development of three distinct retirement strategy models aimed at simplifying decision-making and addressing core retirement needs. The 'Certainty' model balances flexibility and certainty, with a suggested 70% allocation to account-based pensions (ABPs) and 30% to lifetime income products, such as lifetime annuities. This model aims to provide retirees with confidence that their money will last a lifetime. The 'Balance' model, designed for those seeking greater flexibility, suggests an 85% allocation to ABPs and 15% to lifetime income products. Finally, the 'Flexibility' model prioritises complete flexibility with a 100% allocation to ABPs, though it carries a trade-off of less income certainty.

Adrian Aardoom, Head of Retirement Partnerships at Challenger, spoke on the significance of these models. "There is mounting pressure on the financial services industry to better address the needs of Australians when it comes to their retirement planning and income demands," Mr Aardoom said.
