Scammers targeting Aussie investors
ASIC registry customers have been warned to be vigilant after reports emerged that Australians have been receiving fraudulent emails.

The scam emails, pictured below, claim to be from ASIC and attempt to lure recipients into clicking attachments or links to false invoices, according to the investment watchdog.
ASIC told Nestegg.com.au that the quickest way to verify links was to hover a cursor above them, as pictured.
ASIC Commissioner John Price says scams are particularly prevalent this time of the year. He’s urged investors to remain sceptical of any irregular correspondence.
“Scam emails often appear at busy times of the year such as holiday and tax time, when it’s easy to overlook something suspicious,” Mr Price said.
According to ASIC, these fraudulent emails appear different to official ASIC communications. The scam emails often ask the recipient to make a payment or download an invoice via an attached link.
The one below asked investors to download a 'Renewal Letter' which likely contains some form of spyware, according to ASIC.
ASIC recommended that you should protect yourself online by maintaining up-to-date anti-virus, malware and spyware protection software, as well as your firewall.
It advised that email attachments are correctly scanned by security software prior to opening them, with .exe and .zip files more likely to contain malware.
ASIC advised that if recipients of an ASIC email have any doubts over its authenticity, they should verify it with the commission by phone.
Alternatively, scams can be flagged with the ACCC’s Scamwatch.
