Franklin Templeton's Australian Absolute Return Bond Fund – Class M has achieved a prestigious accolade, receiving a Gold rating from Morningstar as of 27 May 2026. This recognition, the highest available from the research house, underscores the fund's strong performance and disciplined investment approach. Morningstar’s rating is based on 100% Analyst-Driven input and 100% Data Coverage, reflecting the firm’s high conviction in the fund's ability to deliver positive risk-adjusted returns over a full market cycle.
The Morningstar Research Report highlighted the fund's “disciplined approach and stable team” as key factors in its decision, noting the fund's consistent, defensive investment strategy and focus on investment-grade opportunities. This recognition places the fund as an appealing option for risk-aware investors.
Felicity Walsh, Managing Director of Franklin Templeton Australia, expressed her commendation for the team behind the fund. “Congratulations to Chris Siniakov, Andrew Canobi and the broader team on this achievement,” she said. “This recognition underscores the strength of a long-tenured, highly cohesive team and their continued commitment to delivering for clients. Their disciplined approach, combining macro insights with bottom-up research, positions the strategy to manage changing market conditions with resilience. It is likely to be suited for investors seeking income and capital preservation.”
The Melbourne-based Australian Fixed Income team, led by co-portfolio managers Chris Siniakov and Andrew Canobi, manages the fund. Both Siniakov and Canobi bring over 34 years of investment experience to the table, having worked together for 23 years. Their extensive expertise has been instrumental in steering the fund towards its current success.
Chris Siniakov, Managing Director of Fixed Income at Franklin Templeton Australia, expressed his delight at the recognition. “We are delighted by this recognition and the long-term success of our Fund,” Siniakov stated. “Clients who allocated to our Absolute Return strategies have enjoyed robust performance over the past few years through returns of 4.8% p.a. net of fees, exceeding traditional Australian fixed income allocations where the AusBond Composite Index has acted as a significant anchor returning just 2.0% p.a. over the last three years to April.”

The fund’s strategy involves building portfolios that seek attractive risk-adjusted returns through a combination of top-down macroeconomic insights, bottom-up fundamental research, and quantitative methodologies. This approach allows the team to leverage their extensive knowledge of both local and international markets to construct portfolios that access a diverse range of fixed income sectors and geographies.
The Franklin Australian Absolute Return Bond Fund is designed as an actively managed absolute return fixed income portfolio. Its objective is to deliver attractive returns through the interest rate and credit cycles while protecting against capital volatility through strong risk management. The fund aims to deliver returns in excess of the Bloomberg AusBond Bank Bill Index, after fees and expenses, over the short to medium term.
Established in December 2014, the fund has grown significantly, with over $1 billion in assets under management as of December 31, 2025. This growth reflects the trust and confidence investors have placed in the fund's strategy and management team.
The Morningstar Gold rating serves as a testament to the fund’s robust performance and strategic management. It highlights the team’s ability to navigate complex market conditions and deliver consistent returns to investors. As the investment landscape continues to evolve, Franklin Templeton's Australian Absolute Return Bond Fund stands out as a reliable option for those seeking income and capital preservation in their investment portfolios.
