In a bid to enhance retirement outcomes for Australians, a recent whitepaper by Industry Fund Services, in collaboration with Challenger, has highlighted the importance of simplifying retirement advice frameworks. The research underscores how reframing advice can address behavioural biases that often hinder effective retirement planning.

The study identifies five key behavioural biases that complicate long-term decision-making in retirement planning. Among these are the choice paradox and framing, which leave individuals overwhelmed by the multitude of options and complexities, and temporal discounting, where immediate gains are prioritised over long-term security. Loss aversion, the tendency to feel losses more acutely than gains, also plays a significant role in decision-making.

Behavioural Scientist Dan Monheit commented on the findings, emphasising the critical role of addressing these biases. "Financial advisers cannot avoid influencing preferences. Every aspect of an interaction, from the order options are presented to the way risks and rewards are framed, shapes outcomes," Mr Monheit said. He added, "This presents a significant opportunity to remove complexity and improve the advice experience. By framing choices in a way that aligns with people’s underlying preferences - not in response to overwhelming information - they’re more likely to make confident, informed decisions."

The whitepaper suggests that choice architecture, a concept that structures options more effectively, can be instrumental in retirement income planning. This approach is crucial as retirees must balance maximising income, accessing funds, and maintaining sustainability. Advisers are encouraged to act as Choice Architects by employing simple language and visuals, narrowing decision-making, and reframing discussions to focus on benefits.

Adrian Gervasoni, Executive Manager of Advice Services at Industry Fund Services, highlighted the evolving role of advisers in this landscape. "Retirement planning is about more than just financial modelling - it's about helping retirees make confident decisions in the face of uncertainty," Mr Gervasoni remarked. He further explained, "Through a diligent approach to choice architecture we can put the retiree in the driver's seat. We want to move the conversation from product features and benefits to focus on consumer preferences, such as certainty and flexibility. Ultimately, the goal is to deliver greater confidence when entering into retirement."

Default bias, where individuals instinctively choose more familiar options, is another challenge in retirement planning. This bias can affect both advisers and retirees. "Advice is a human-centric process, filled with emotions and biases that influence the options we present and the way information is understood," Mr Gervasoni noted. He stressed the importance of shifting focus from familiar options, like account-based pensions, to more sustainable and secure retirement income solutions.

The research led to the development of three distinct retirement strategy models aimed at simplifying decision-making and addressing core retirement needs. The 'Certainty' model balances flexibility and certainty, with a suggested 70% allocation to account-based pensions (ABPs) and 30% to lifetime income products, such as lifetime annuities. This model aims to provide retirees with confidence that their money will last a lifetime. The 'Balance' model, designed for those seeking greater flexibility, suggests an 85% allocation to ABPs and 15% to lifetime income products. Finally, the 'Flexibility' model prioritises complete flexibility with a 100% allocation to ABPs, though it carries a trade-off of less income certainty.

Adrian Aardoom, Head of Retirement Partnerships at Challenger, spoke on the significance of these models. "There is mounting pressure on the financial services industry to better address the needs of Australians when it comes to their retirement planning and income demands," Mr Aardoom said. He added, "Through an understanding of behavioural biases, combined with Challenger’s deep expertise in retirement income, we have developed a simplified, practical framework that members can easily understand and advisers can easily embed."

With a record number of Australians entering retirement, the whitepaper offers superfunds, advisers, and the broader industry valuable tools and insights to improve retirement discussions and outcomes. Rest, one of Australia’s largest profit-to-member superannuation funds, has unveiled a new digital experience aimed at making retirement preparation simpler and more personalised for its members.

The Rest Retire Ready experience streamlines how pre-retirement members can access the fund’s tools, services, and educational content, helping guide them towards support tailored to their needs. The launch is accompanied by a new brand campaign designed to highlight how Rest is supporting Australians over 50 as they prepare for retirement.

Rest’s Chief Member Officer Simone Van Veen said the Retire Ready experience was developed in collaboration with the fund’s advice and superannuation specialists, following direct member feedback. It forms part of Rest’s broader strategy to help members achieve the best possible retirement outcomes.

“At Rest, our more than 2 million members are at the heart of everything we do and we’re focused on understanding their unique situations, while supporting them to reach the future they see for themselves in retirement,” Ms Van Veen said.

“While we are the number-one fund for young Australians at the start of their working life, we also represent around 350,000 members aged 50 and older. This makes us a top-10 fund for members nearing or in retirement.”

Ms Van Veen said Rest’s research showed many members find preparing for retirement daunting, particularly when balancing cost-of-living pressures and caring responsibilities.

“Our members tell us they don’t always know where to start when it comes to preparing for retirement and it should be simpler and more relevant to their individual circumstances,” she said.

“When we stand in our members’ shoes, we know planning for the future can feel complex. Knowing where to start can often seem daunting. Rest Retire Ready is designed to provide that gateway into a deeper retirement conversation.”

Accessible via Rest’s website, the new experience invites members to complete a short digital questionnaire that curates personalised recommendations from Rest’s library of articles, videos, podcasts, webinars, calculators, and digital advice tools.

“This new digital journey is all about putting the unique needs of our diverse membership first – offering tailored guidance and connecting members to the right support at the right time,” Ms Van Veen said.

“We’ve designed this experience to be flexible, accessible, and based on real member feedback. Through this experience, we are aiming to empower our members to make confident decisions for their future.”

The Rest Retire Ready platform can also connect members with Rest’s three-layer advice model, which includes educational resources and calculators, digital intra-fund advice, and personal advice from phone-based advisers.

Rest’s digital advice tools are now used around 30,000 times each year — representing about 85 per cent of all member advice interactions. While younger members make up the largest group of users overall, older members are the most engaged users on a per-member basis.

The launch is supported by a retro-themed campaign that draws on nostalgia and confidence to inspire members to take positive steps towards a secure retirement. Rest said further enhancements and advice integrations are planned as part of a phased rollout.

In a significant move aimed at addressing the retirement concerns of Australians, AMP has unveiled the Retirement Confidence Pulse, a national barometer designed to gauge the financial confidence of Australians regarding life after work. The introduction of this new measure comes at a time when the cost of securing a comfortable retirement has escalated significantly. According to recent data from the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA), the annual cost for a couple aged 65 and over to maintain a comfortable lifestyle has surged by over $13,000 in the past five years, now exceeding $75,000. For individuals, the cost is $53,289 per year, up from $43,687 in 2020.

Alexis George, AMP's Chief Executive, expressed concern over these findings, stating, "Australians over the age of 65 will make up nearly a quarter of our population within four decades – a demographic shift set to reshape the nation's economic and social landscape. Yet, as this Pulse shows, despite growing super balances and national wealth, too many feel financially insecure about life after work – an issue that needs to be front and centre for policymakers and the superannuation industry."

The Retirement Confidence Pulse has shed light on several key areas of concern. A significant gender gap exists, with only two in five women feeling confident about their retirement prospects, compared to nearly three in five men. This disparity underscores the ongoing challenges women face in achieving financial security.

The survey also highlighted the struggles of the so-called "Sandwich Generation" – individuals in their 40s who are often juggling mortgages, raising children, and caring for ageing parents. Fewer than two in five in this age group expressed confidence in their retirement plans. Single mothers in their 40s reported particularly low confidence levels, with less than one in five feeling secure about their retirement, marking them as one of the most vulnerable groups.

Interestingly, the survey revealed that confidence does not necessarily increase with age. More than one in three Australians aged 65 and older still feel financially insecure, worried that their savings may not last through their retirement years. This finding suggests that even reaching the traditional retirement age does not guarantee financial peace of mind.

The survey also identified a "confidence dividend" associated with being in a partnership. Partnered Australians are significantly more confident about their retirement prospects, with nearly three in five expressing confidence, compared to just two in five singles. However, divorce can have a detrimental impact on retirement confidence, particularly for women. Only one in three separated or divorced women feel confident about their financial future, in contrast to over half of separated or divorced men.

Income levels also play a crucial role in retirement confidence. Three in four Australians earning between $190,000 and $250,000 reported feeling confident about their retirement, while only two in five earning less than $45,000 shared the same sentiment. Middle-income Australians, those earning between $45,000 and $135,000, were evenly split, with just half expressing confidence.

In response to these findings, AMP has launched the Retirement Confidence Hub, an initiative aimed at translating insights into practical solutions. The Hub's Advisory Committee, which includes industry experts such as AMP’s Chief Economist Dr Shane Oliver and Director of Retirement Ben Hillier, is tasked with addressing these challenges. Nicola Stokes, CEO of the AMP Foundation, is also part of the committee, ensuring that social and community needs are considered.
