A new survey has suggested that Gen Z are just as likely as Baby Boomers to have a self-managed super fund.

Young people are now taking control of their super investments as much as older generations with a new eToro survey finding that 47 per cent of Aussies aged under 35 currently have a self-managed super fund (SMSF).

Around 45 per cent of Gen Z respondents were found to have an SMSF, equal to the uptake among Baby Boomers, and 76 per cent of these Zoomers said they had created their SMSF within the past five years.

Two-thirds of Aussies aged under 35 with an SMSF said they had been building their fund for between one and five years.

“Despite stereotypical perceptions, Millennials and Gen Z Aussies are increasingly taking their superannuation and finances into their own hands,” said eToro Australia MD Robert Francis.

“They are realising the importance of investing younger than their parents - many as soon as 18 - in order to put themselves in an advantageous position for a comfortable retirement.”

A third of the young Aussies surveyed believed that they could get a better average return managing their super themselves compared to a traditional super fund.

Most young people said they were focused on generating a diversified SMSF portfolio, including 84 per cent of Millennials and 75 per cent of Gen Z.

The SMSF portfolios of Millennials were predominantly filled with stocks (60 per cent), crypto (43 per cent) and property (41 per cent).

Meanwhile, Gen Z respondents were more likely than Millenials to hold stocks (72 per cent), crypto (64 per cent) and property (50 per cent) in their portfolio, but both younger generations held less property than those aged over 45 (54 per cent).

For Millennial stock investors, the local share market is preferred (45 per cent) to the US (32 per cent), in contrast to Gen Z stock investors who favoured the US markets (47 per cent) ahead of the ASX (29 per cent).

Both generations highlighted tech, energy, real estate and financials as their top sectors, along with specific preferences of healthcare for Millennials and materials for Gen Z.

eToro said that young investors tended to shy away from investments with a higher perceived risk such as CFDs, options and FX.

The biggest barriers cited by those who don’t have an SMSF included not knowing where to begin, not knowing how an SMSF works and preferring someone else to manage their super on their behalf.

36 per cent of Millennials said they contributed between $5,000 and $10,000 to their SMSF annually while 50 per cent of Gen Z contributed between $1,000 and $5,000.

Only 16 per cent of those aged under 35 contribute more than $10,000 to their fund per year.

New research released on Tuesday (15 February) by the University of Adelaide revealed that the investment performance of a typical self-managed super fund (SMSF) improves as the fund balance approaches $200,000.

This, the SMSF Association said in a statement, disproves current regulatory guidance by reinforcing an earlier finding that SMSFs with balances of $200,000 or more are cost-effective compared with industry and retail superannuation funds.

The SMSF Association, which commissioned the report based on a study of over 318,000 SMSFs, said the research quashes ASIC’s guidance to advisers and licensees that suggested that, on average, SMSFs with balances below $500,000 have lower returns after expenses and tax than funds regulated by APRA.

“The research data revealed no material differences in performance patterns for SMSFs between $200,000 and $500,000, so the notion that smaller SMSFs in this range deliver materially lower investment returns, on average, than larger SMSFs in this range, is not supported by the research results,” said John Maroney, the association’s chief executive.

“The research results suggest a more appropriate threshold is $200,000”.

Mr Maroney believes these new findings are “a very significant development for the SMSF sector”.

Commenting on the report, Professor Ralf Zurbruegg from the University of Adelaide explained that the method used by the ATO to calculate SMSF performance significantly differs from that used by APRA to measure the effectiveness of its own funds.

“When we account for the differences in how the performance of these funds is calculated, neither APRA regulated superannuation funds nor SMSFs with balances above $200,000 consistently under or out-perform each other,” Professor Zurbruegg said.

Moreover, the new research found that SMSFs with more diversified asset allocations achieve higher returns.

“The performance benefits of adding a second, third or fourth asset class are strong and consistent across the 2017-19 period,” Mr Zurbruegg said.

“The results provide a useful reference point and education tool for SMSF professionals and investors and supports the regulatory focus on SMSFs with inadequate levels of diversification.”

While more and more Aussies are looking to take control of their financial future, they’re making the same mistakes and afoul of the same pitfalls.

According to Equity Trustees national manager for estate planning Marie Brownell, the rise in DIY or off-the-shelf trusts has come hand-in-hand with a rise in legal wrangles for those involved.

“Australians are a nation of DIY fanatics but trusts are complex legal structures and not something anyone should create without specialist legal advice,” she said.

Ms Brownell bemoaned the reality that it was all too common for accountants to offer clients of an off-the-shelf trust when asked for advice on minimising tax, rather than a more bespoke option that has been properly drafted for a client’s needs and circumstances.

While there are many good reasons to consider establishing a trust, it’s important to do it right.

“In order to establish a trust that is suitable for your current and changing circumstances, as well as those of your loved ones, always get proper legal advice, ensure you have a good succession plan for who is going to control the trust on death or incapacity and never sign anything you don’t understand,” Ms Brownell recommended.

Taking shortcuts here can yield courtroom headaches in the long run.

Ms Brownell noted a similar set of dynamics at play when it came to Australia’s burgeoning self-managed super fund sector.

“As a result of the proliferation of SMSFs in Australia, we are seeing more SMSFs challenging trust decisions as a result of trustees acting negligently, incompetently or even fraudulently,” she said.

As with trusts, it’s critical that those looking to set up a self-managed super fund understand the rules they’ll need to comply with.

Ms Brownell warned that many of those who choose to go the SMSF route forget that superannuation death benefits do not automatically fall into the estate for distribution in accordance with the will. 

“In the absence of a binding death benefit nomination, the trustee of the fund will decide who gets the benefit,” she explained.

Another point that’s often overlooked is how that trustee is determined.

“If it’s someone who stands to benefit themselves, in a manner contrary to your wishes, then you need to carefully consider what steps you need to take to ensure your death benefit is paid as you intend,” she suggested.

Self-managed super funds have a lot to offer younger Australians looking for greater control over their financial future.

Growing awareness of what self-managed super funds (SMSFs) can offer is catching the attention of younger Australians.

New data released by AUSIEX has suggested that Gen Y, millennials, and Gen Z may be the fastest-growing market segments when it comes to SMSFs uptake.

While SMSFs have traditionally been the domain of those approaching the decumulation phase, AUSIEX CEO Eric Blewitt said that recent tinkering of the super system has likely bred greater awareness among younger Australians.

“SMSFs may be appealing to younger people due to the fact they provide greater control over investments,” he said. 

Across the first quarter of this financial year, AUSIEX observed a 9.3 per cent increase in the number of new SMSF accounts being opened. Of those new accounts, millennials were the fastest-growing segment.

Overall, AUSIEX said that millennials now accounted for approximately 10 per cent of all new SMSF accounts. This increase puts the cohort at around double the levels seen from 2016 to 2019.

The number of new SMSF accounts being opened by Gen Z has also doubled over the past 12 months.

According to AUSIEX, September 2021 represented a 16-month high for the number of advised SMSF accounts being created through the investment services platform.

“The long-held view that Australians do not actively engage with their super until they near retirement looks to be changing,” Mr Blewitt said.

Nevertheless, he said that this data raised questions about whether advisers and fund managers may need to pivot to attract and retain the attention of these new clients.

AUSIEX found that there was a clear difference between how younger SMSF users and other accounts invested.

They found that SMSF accounts held by Gen Z investors had the lowest percentage of ETF investments compared to older generations.

While SMSFs accounted for 20 per cent of all AUSIEX trades in the period since January 2020, the company said these traders represented only 10 per cent of total AUSIEX accounts.

Mr Blewitt drew a line between this recent rise in SMSFs among younger generations and the broader uptick in retail trading and other forms of self-directed investing.

AUSIEX’s most recent Australia’s Trading Transformation report found a 250 per cent rise in the number of self-directed investors under the age of 25 in Australia from the start of the pandemic through to March 2021.

“All of this data is painting a picture of much greater interest from younger people in taking control of their financial goals,” he said.

There are plenty of good reasons to invest in property via an SMSF, but it pays to do your homework.

Self-managed super funds (SMSFs) got the green light for limited resource borrowing arrangements (LRBAs) back in 2007.

The years since have seen more and more Australians have looked to supercharge their superannuation through assets like property and shares.

Since you can direct how your super is invested with a self-managed super fund, LRBAs allow you to choose to take advantage of Australia’s property market now rather than later.

A senior financial planner at Creation Wealth, Andrew Zbik suggested that LRBAs within Australia’s superannuation system now account for 2.32 per cent of all loans.

If you’re looking to add your retirement fund into that statistic, he said that there are four key things you’ll need to keep in mind.

The first is that you’ll need to comply with a ton of regulations and rules around how SMSFs are structured. More than just the minimum $500,000 that ASIC requires to establish an SMSF, the ATO obliges SMSF trustees to keep asset diversification in mind.

Mr Zbik said that the days of starting an SMSF with a balance of $200,000 to buy an investment property as the sole asset of the fund are numbered.

“Such a move is no longer deemed to be in the best interest of the members of the fund, due to a lack of asset diversification and a lack of liquidity,” he explained.

“Most lenders are now requiring a 10 per cent liquidity buffer of cash and/or shares outside of the value of the property.”

Capitalising on the explosive trends in Australia’s property market might seem like an easy way to boost your super. However, Mr Zbik noted that it’s not going to be a gambit that works well for everyone, due to the typical length of Australia’s property cycle.

If you have less than 10 years between now and your retirement, this might not be the property play for you.

“Ideally, the intention should be to hold the property beyond this minimum time period of 10 years,” Mr Zbik explained.

If you’re anywhere near retirement, you’re not going to have the time needed for your SMSF to go through the full process of buying a property, paying off the debt, letting it appreciate and then flipping it into an asset class that provides a higher income yield.

“Thus, I believe property is a great asset to provide leverage and capital growth, but property is not necessarily the best income-producing asset to provide an income stream to fund an account-based pension,” Mr Zbik said.

Many Australians approach super with a set-and-forget mindset. Unfortunately, if you’re planning to invest in property via an SMSF, that approach isn’t as viable.

Mr Zbik said that the logistics associated with cash flow and loan repayments mean that property investing via SMSF is a more hands-on affair.

“Whenever you take on a loan, you need a plan to pay down this loan,” he said.

“Will your concessional contributions be enough to pay out the loan? Will you need to make extra contributions to your SMSF to have the property loan paid down before retirement? These questions need to be answered.”

If one of your SMSF members loses their job or your property loses its tenant, it can cause big problems for your property investing strategy.

In either case, Mr Zbik recommended your SMSF hold a cash buffer that amounts to six months of property expenses.

“A good diversification strategy would also include other liquid assets such as Australian shares, international shares and fixed-income securities,” he said.

That way, in the worst-case scenario, you have other assets available to liquidate and can avoid a “fire sale” of the property.

“With property, it is not possible to shave off a bedroom and sell it to provide cash for pensions,” Mr Zbik said.

The corporate regulator has stepped in to wind up several companies that have scammed millions from SMSF investors.

ASIC has successfully applied to the Federal Court to wind up two NSW-based companies, SA Services and Orphans Asia, after it was found that the businesses obtained nearly $10 million in financing when they held no authority to deal in financial products. 

SA Services and Orphans Asia came to ASIC’s attention during the investigation into PW Kitt Co and its sole director Larry Dawson. Mr Dawson is a director of both PW Kitt Co and Orphans Asia.

“ASIC’s application was based on concerns that SA Services and Orphans Asia allegedly obtained approximately $2.4 million in Australian investor funds through cold-calling Australian consumers and operating the now-defunct website smsfadvisory.com,” ASIC said.

“Neither SA Services nor Orphans Asia is licensed or authorised to deal in financial products or provide financial services.”

ASIC said its investigation also identified that PW Kitt Co obtained over $7.4 million in Australian investor funds through allegedly cold-calling and operating the websites smsfadvisory.com and pwkittco.com.

PW Kitt Co held no licence or authority to deal in financial products or provide financial services. 

The corporate regulator had submitted to the court that the defendants were using the same or substantially similar company and business names to an unrelated business, SMSF Advisory Services Pty Ltd and P.W. Kitt & Co. 

“It is also alleged that the defendants used the Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL) number of another company,” ASIC said.

“ASIC remains concerned that the defendants appear to have no connection with those businesses and hold no licence or authority to deal in financial products or provide financial services.”

At the regulator’s request, SA Services and Orphans Asia passed special resolutions resolving that their respective companies be wound up by the court.

ASIC has also obtained orders that Michael Hill and Anthony Connelly of McGrathNicol, the current liquidators of PW Kitt Co, be appointed as joint and several liquidators of SA Services and Orphans Asia.

ASIC has since successfully applied to the court to wind up and appoint liquidators to PW Kitt Co. ASIC’s action against Mr Dawson for breaching his duties as a director of PW Kitt Co has been adjourned pending the hearing and determination of a NSW Police criminal proceeding against Mr Dawson.
