Billionaire population expanding at ‘healthy pace’

There are more billionaires than ever before, with women joining the club at a faster rate than men.

They’re the findings of wealth intelligence company Wealth-X’s 2018 Billionaire Census.

It found that the billionaire population grew by 15 per cent to 2,754, while billionaire wealth grew by 24 per cent in 2017. Both levels of growth resulted in record highs, with the intelligence company considering this a “healthy pace”.

According to the census, a large factor in this growth is the “vibrant technology sector” and a 29 per cent growth in billionaires from the Asia-Pacific region.

The number of female billionaires grew by 18 per cent, while male billionaires grew 14.5 per cent. However, male billionaires still make up 88.3 per cent of the billionaire population.

Where did they study?

Harvard University has made the most billionaires (188), followed by Stanford University (74) and the University of Pennsylvania (64).

Where do they live?

New York is home to 103 billionaires, while 93 call Hong Kong home and 74 live in San Francisco.

Sixty-nine live in Moscow and 62 in London.

How much do they have?

Among global billionaires, 10 have $50 billion or more each, with their total wealth up 110 per cent on 2016.

That’s followed by the 21 with between $25 billion and $50 billion, and 108 with between $10 billion and $25 billion.

There are 275 billionaires in the $5 billion to $10 billion range, while 956 have between $2 billion and $5 billion.

Most billionaires (1,384) have between $1 billion and $2 billion.
