A 200-year-old colonial coin has well and truly surpassed the original five shillings (50 cents) value that was stamped on it back in 1813.

According to Noble Numismatics, the 1813 “holey dollar” coin is expected to sell for more than $225,000 later this month at a Sydney auction.

The coin was created when the New South Wales governor of the time, Lachlan Macquarie, urgently needed official currency and ordered thousands of Spanish silver dollars.

He had the centres stamped out to create two coins from each.

Noble said that the “holey dollars” and their centres, known as “dumps”, are extremely rare and keenly sought by collectors and investors.

Five of the dumps will also go under the hammer, with estimated values of up to $50,000.
